Will anyone be available Sunday late morning early afternoon (yes its past 4am here and I been beating my head since midnight) to help a guy who is struggling with getting setup on PSK.  I've got the IC-7200 and have been trying to get either FLDigi or HRD ver5 (I waited too late to purchase so my trial has ran out) working.  In HRD I get the streams although I have to adjust the RF squelch or I overload the sound card.  It seems I remember that version 6 wasn't so much a PITA.  Right now I'm too the point where I got everything working I believe but I can't confirm I have audio going out to the radio.  PTT is working fine.

In FLDigi, I had much more troubles early on but I finally found the post here about HamLib config and I finally got rig control it appears.

If it matters, I'm on Windows 7 64bit.

If your PTT is working fine then look at the RF output power meter. If you've got RF power coming out then you've got audio coming out of the PC.

By RF "squelch" I assume you mean RF gain. While this is a useful control, the primary means of adjusting the audio level into your software should be the Sound Control Panel. Go to the Sound Control Panel, select the Recording Devices tab, double click the audio device that is associated with the radio, select the Levels tab, then adjust there. By the way, if you right click the percentage indicator you can change it to Decibels, which you might find more convenient.

Similarly you want to adjust your output RF power level using the audio drive level from the PC. Again you can also do this with the Sound Control Panel by adjusting the levels on the appropriate output device. I also like that Fldigi has a built-in method for adjusting output level and I use that exclusively, leaving the output sound device at maximum (I don't use HRD--too much bloatware).

Make certain your rig is set to 100W. This way your amplifier has maximum headroom to handle the crest factor (aka peak to average power ratio--PAPR) of the digital modulation. Then adjust the audio drive level to obtain the RF output power level you want. Generally with PSK shoot for 50W peaks on the built-in meter of the 7200 as a maximum (the 7200 does not have a true peak-reading meter so your actual peaks will be much higher, that's why you stop at 50W). Of course you might not need that much power so feel free to turn the audio drive down and thereby run less. You can also use ALC indication as a guide. A lot of people will say "no ALC indicated at all" but on Icom rigs a little ALC is generally OK because the ALC meter on the Icom 7xxx series is quite conservative.

Finally, make sure that ALL DSP features of the radio are OFF on both transmit and receive. This means noise blanking, noise reduction, compression, etc. These things will distort the digital modulations and mess with the ability of the software to encode and decode the modulations properly.

I forgot--there is also a "USB level" setting in the radio that you can adjust.

Here is an excellent youtube tutorial on 7200 digital mode setup. This should fix you right up...

Problem solved.  I didn't have RF coming out when I finished last night but earlier on I did and I kust mucked up the settings at some point.  RF squelch is set back to 12oclock where it should be and my audio is set appropriate.  ALL my DSP is now off.  Data mode, MoD and D-MoD were set correct all along.  My audio overload issue was solved by adjusting the mic level to 1 (just happened to be the same as in the video).  Going through the steps in the video with the dummy load helped alot.  I flipped back to the Antenna and through out a CQ in an area that looked to be completely dead and immediately got a response as someone just happened to be be 14.072 about 800 miles south of me.  599 report on both ends.  I was quite pleased as I was merely just going through the setup steps.  Now to finish watch the rest of the video.

Maybe later on I will see if HRD is happy too but for now I still need to bag K2H and WM3PEN

aa777888-2.  Thanks for the help.  I really appreciate it.

Sweet! Glad to help. Now try out Olivia 16/500 mode (14072 or so is a good spot) and prepare to join us on the arfcom weekly digi net (see the digi net thread for details).

Sorry, I had a hard drive failure and replaced it a few weeks back.  Had to load Win from scratch, etc.  So I don't have FLDigi back up and running.

HOWEVER, I did have two threads about this.

The first link I have actually had open for about a week on my other computer.  Seeing here reminding me about glancing it before.  The 2nd thread I hadn't seen.  I'm going to review them both in detail tomorrow as I have a friend that also has a 7200.
