So I'm still a newbie, I have a Kenwood TH-D7A and a TM-V71A, can I do packet operations with either radio without doing APRS? I'm really wanting to do some digital comms but just not sure on the hows to packet ops. Am I stuck interfacing the radios to laptops/computers and running them as modems?

I'm an old school packet guy from when we ran TNC's (terminal node controllers) as a "smart modem". Not too much activity in the packet world these days except for APRS. Most all digital ops are using a software bases system these days.

Is packet comm still alive? Aside from APRS, is there a reason to break out my epson equity II+(xt/8088) and KPC-2? Man, I haven't surfed the packet bbs system in years.

There are still active PBBS's and at least 1 DX cluster in my area.  YMMV.  Also there's some PBBS's on a few LEO SAT's.

Pocketdigi, you can run the digital modes with a pda if you have one.
