So I'm getting ready to take my kids camping (state park). I'm always paranoid about predators....two legged and four legged.

When I used to man an LP/OP in the Army with my guys we'd dental floss the shit out of our position.  Nothing you can't run through at break neck speed (and it'll cut you up!), but you can't be stealthy through it.

Anyway, I was thinking in addition to a motion sensor doorbell ringer I put next to the tent I was going to get some of These

Anyone ever use these?  Just don't want anyone sneaking up on my position. Sorry, the paranoid infantryman in me

I think you'd be good with a couple of LP/OPs.

Maybe a perimeter patrol.

Throw in some recon by fire and terrain denial every so often.

Its easy to build a proximity detector with a few electronic parts, abattery

and a wire strung in a loop around whatever you want to protect.

I built one 30 years ago and plan to have one ready if I need it.

I can look up the schematic and should post it here.  Its a very simple project.

There are resistor or capacitive types.  I like the capacitive type because if anything

gets near the wire, itll trip and it can turn on a silent alarm or whatever you want.

If you want to google it, try "proximity detector".

FIFY.

I've also wondered about this and started a few related threads on it over the years.  I think the environment has a lot to do with it.  In the woods with lots of trees, branches, leaves....I'd definitely want something that was sensitive to body heat.  You also have rodents and other mostly harmless animals so you want that body heat to be sensitive to larger bodies.

That's just an example.

Personally, I'm a really deep sleeper sometimes so my approach is more reactive than proactive....pistol on my hip (G20 w/ DT ammo) and rifle at my side (SU-16C)...both with lights attached. Not the ideal/perfect setup.  Just what I do.  Improvement is needed.

They make trip wire setups that can be triggered to strike a 12ga. primer.  For legality purposes, it'd have to be a blank.  3 of those setup in 2' increments surrounding your camp site should give you a little warning unless the threat is leaping from tree to tree, flies, or realllllyyyy smart/observant.

Plus they only weigh maybe a pound each (mine ignites a snap-lite).

I have done some camping down by the river and it's a general good idea to have some kind of early warning. I have used floss and "random" Beer cans I found and made a hasty alarm. Anything that trips the floss rattles the cans and gives you enough time to wake up and go into the fight mode.

Generally I am more worried about the things that crawl out of the water than the river rats but when it's 3 in the morning and the banjos start getting closer, it's generally a good idea to consider putting the campfire out.

Go simple if it works for you. Get a few tin cans, and put some pebbles in them, and suspend on tripwire. The rattling will give you a little early warning. Alternately, you could get one of those stupid ass personal alarm devices, you know, the ones where you pull the cord if you're being man-raped. You could rig that up to tripwire to pull the cord on the alarm when force is applied. Food for thought.

At first I thought your post was stupid-city-boy- paranoia. But I guess in your neck of the woods you might have to worry about druggies and gangbangers and other dirt balls. So I guess just do what feels right and try not to let it take away from being outdoors.

I wouldn't worry too much about 4-legged animals. I backpack into grizzly bear/ wolf/ cougar/ black bear/ moose country and dont have a problem..

Have fun.

I make and use the 12gauge blank/flare alarms, and generally try to put them about 50yds out from where I am bedding down.

Mono-filament works great as line and you can use eye hooks to zigzag line between trees to make a kind of net so the line can't be easily crawled under or stepped over.

state park..middle of the woods....in FL lol .

you'll have more issues keeping racoons outta your shit than bears or panthers at most "state" parks here. sames goes with two  legged idiots. most..again..most parks here are damn near koa style and not "middle" ofthe woods. unless your paying/renting a group camp area in a state forest/wma.im not saying you wont run into the occasional young bear trying a trash can or the pack of well trained cooler raiders(coons)..who even do day light raids but panthers is pushing it. a tent full of loud kids or drunk 20 somethings will be the biggest annoyances.

even where i hike. ONF its way worse. than any state "park" and is middle of bfe.

what i use-

a tarp shelter- allows me 360 view

2- i dont sleep heavy

3- i carry a sidearm and sleep withit.

4- i has dog

5- i hike withothers who sleep or are armed the same

6- joggers alarms rigged with trip wire at the main approaches to my camp area..when tripped its a 180db alarm

7- i dont camp 10 ft off the trail,,i dont have bonefires and we keep noise levels down.

ymmv

what park btw,

its a body magnet always has been. its so damn big so much goes on there.

hell in our early 20's we were in no where land out there. found an old deep freezer. full of bones.

that blog may as well list all the other shit to... but the part/opening about the rainbow people..we'll feb thru march is not the time to take the kids to shanty pond,,,hopkins or hidden pond..or near salt springs.

Are you that Air Force guy that was on preppers last night?  The roided out Air Force guy that was trying to make rat trap and shotgun primer trip alarms?  Cause you remind me of him.

On a serious note,  I really think surrounding you camp with an alarm system is a bit much for camping in the lower 48, but if that is what you want to do, then I would suggest as the others, the shotgun shell (no shot of course).  I don't know much about Florida, maybe the hills have eyes there.

Either way, if you are having fun and it isn't hurting anyone or anything then do it to it, that is the most important thing,

The shotgun blank tripwire is neat and I may make or buy some one day for some other purpose, but I have the audible alert already worked out. It's the same thing I used when there were a bunch of gang bangers breaking into our police cars. They are  motion sensors that have a remote doorbell chime and work very well. It's about the size of a baby monitor.

I'd just like to use the motion light because it should make most 2 and 4 leg trespassers take a hike. Only ones I'd have to worry about are goons and coons!  I've had coons come right up to me and try to steal an MRE right out of my hand!  . Another guy came running up Happy Gilmore style and whacked that coon with his M16!  It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen!......noise and light discipline went right out the window for the next 5 minutes. LOL

This seems to have been said in jest but it's not a horrible idea.  Although personally I'd go the Seizure Dog route.  Just grab a vest that says "on duty, do not pet me"...if anyone stops by..."Hey, he's my seizure dog, I'm epileptic"...

When you guys are doing a weekend camp (multi-day) for recreation, and hiking during the day, do you pack everything up and carry it with you all day? Or leave camp set up and just take a daypack? I'm guessing it depends on the location?

depends on the park/location.

some state parks here i wouldnt do it. because they are nothing more than parking lot camping . aka  pinic bench,,slab or dirt slab for tent and you may or may not have foliage between you and neighbors. others you set off , meaning a person deliberately has to walk up to your spot.

i judge accordingly. but my SSS gear always stays with me...

Guys, in this day and age, using some of the alarm devices being described here, and being found out by the Man, might get you a free ride one way, and the taking of your child in a different direction.

Or a liability lawsuit or worse if one should go off around the wrong person.

There are FAR better ways that have been discussed here several times, and a Google search should pick them up.

Maybe you need to get away from FL and move out west where there are thousands of miles of Forest Service land.  You can hike in and set up camp pretty much anywhere that tickles your fancy and no worry at all that someone is going to stumble upon you.

After a short 2.5 mile hike down a trail, you turn off the trail and head up the ridge through the forest- no trails.  After about six hours of climbing a steep ridge you pop through a saddle and head down the other side into the Wonder Mountain Wilderness.  Ahead of you is Lake 3995 where the trout are big and absolute solitude is guaranteed.  The first time I went in there I went without a tent, just a tarp and sleeping bag.  A bear left a pile about 300 feet from the campsite.  I never worried about it as blacks are generally shy.

From one vet to another; campgrounds are for losers.  You're not a loser.
