Thanks again for the complements. I just recently add a few mods to increase the security for the Zombie shelter. I added a wall with expanded metal in the 40 footer. This will keep children and unauthorized folks out of the engine room. With a Listeroid engine/generator and a soon to be battery banks/inverters there are a lot of dangers in there. It will also serve as more delay for anyone trying to break in. It is made from 4" cee channel, 2"x 4" metal channel for the "studs", and heavy guage expanded metal sheet, it is all welded. The door is a commercial duty job I picked up at the Habitat for Humanity restore for $25. A simplex door lock will top it off this weekend. I also added an alarm with various hard wire zones and long range radio reporting. I also included a pic from inside the "bunker". I'll be busy in there tomorrow loading up some 9. New wall   Alarm    Inside

Excellent work. Your updates always amaze me. You know if there was a magazine called "Better Homes and Bunkers" Yours would be on at least two issues covers. You haven't painted it a silly camoflauge and it's actually bright and well layed out inside. Have you done a weekend test run yet? Seeing how it fares by being sheltered up for 48-72hrs? |

I love the stuff... awesome work man. I have one question if you don't mind. I have worked with shipping containers for years in the automotive industry. How are you going to keep the roofs from rotting out? Paint will only be a short term answer, I'm sure you've thought of it, what did you do? -V |

On our containers in our yard the old owner poured roofind tar into the channels, until the whole top was level (I had nothign to do with it, I think it is a stupid idea and would just have built a pitched roof over the top myself, but he got ideas into his head and ran with them no matter what anyone had to say) They have not rotted out as yet and are many years old, of course, there is no way to tell if water is getting under the tar either |

| Shipping containers have really good paint jobs. There are several coats and layers of very corrosive resistant paints and primers with zinc. The roofs on mine were great just slightly faded from 13 years and 120 trips around the world. I simply pressure washed them and applied a coat of reflective roof paint intended for trailers roofs. The small container has metal roof over it but this was to simply shield it from heat. It works well as the temp difference can be 30 + degrees as indicated by the IR gun shot at the ceiling. I do have standing water on the roof after a rain but have not noticed any degredation since I have built it. There should be a pic or two of the small roof located on the 20 footer. |

| Ref where to buy the hockey puck locks. Lowes has them here in Mo. They were running between 30 and 40 bucks. I love the container idea. My wife does exports for a living and deals with the shippers all the time. I just dont have the room for a container, but I did find some much smaller ones she was working with. The are used to ship fork lifts, and are about the size of a small shed. |
where i work we have bins made of these they are 2x2x6 and they costed about $35 each if i were going to bury a container id dig it out pour a slab then line the walls with these put my container in and have a water proofer cover the cotainer in hot tar.dont know what i would do about the roof still thinking on that one but you would have 2 ft thick walls of concrete.and you can place them with a bobcat and a chain.

It seems to me if you wanted to use a shipping container for an in ground tornado shelter, you wouldn't have to bury it all the way. If you excavated the hole so that the container was half way buried or three quaters of the way buried that it would make the excavation costs less, it would be less load on the structure, and less surface area for winds and or gathering hords of Zombies to act aganst it to knock it over. There is a place in Baytown Texas near Highway 146 and State Highway 225 that has stacks of shipping containers for sell. Nice job. I am sure if I attemped such a project on my own it wouldn't look nearly that good. |
| When I show the containers to people they always mention "won't somebody just cut a hole" The answer is I hope so. I designed the security to push entry through the side. Making that the weakest link was my goal. As when designing any security it is a ballance with what you want to protect $ wise and the $$ available to protect it. On top of that the walls are not that weak. They are 14 guage steel. They bind the blade when you start to cut due to internal stresses. Then there is the foam insulation which is highly flamable not to mention the studs that you may start on. Hit the powder cabinet inside with 35 lbs of powder and 10x100s of primers and your day will get bad real quick. |

The price of used "grade A" storage containers are $1700 each. The price of New - one trip containers are $2600 each. 40' Dry Van Container: The price of "used" storage containers are $1600 each. The price of used "grade A" storage containers are $1800 each. The price of New - one trip containers are $3900 each. 40' High Cube Container: The price of used "grade A" storage containers are $2200 each. The price of New - one trip containers are $4200 each. Please note: "used" = Structurally sound - Wind and water tight Steamship Line container with markings and in most instances there is surface rust. "grade A" = Structurally sound - Cargo worthy for shipping - Wind and water tight Steamship Line or Leasing Company containers in cosmetically better condition." They didn't have used 20' containers in stock. They have been of declining popularity in ocean shipping for at least a decade. And then you add the cost of hauling it from Newark to the price... |
