We shut down our tomato canning for the year. Canned a good bit.
Took the vines out today and fenced the garden patch which adjoins the pig pen. When we let the hogs into the tomato patch, they were in proverbial heaven. They're tearing it up at a prodigious rate.

Why are you letting the pre-food dig up the tomato garden? Several reasons...... 1) They clean the ground of all the spent tomatoes. 2) They will actually turn the soil over deeper than my tiller can. They'll dig up rocks that my tiller would just skim over. 3) They apply copious amounts of natural fertilizer. 4) it gives them something to do other than fooking with their fencing.

why pull the vines before putting the pork out on the plot? There's some thought out there that tomato VINES are toxic to swine. We had a pig poison himself on jimson weed a couple months ago. So we're a bit gun shy on the potential for toxic ingestion since we're only two weeks from taking the pigs to the butcher. |
