I'm looking for a desktop/mobile scanner that will display CTCSS tones.

I have an old Uniden BC780XLT that I think should but I haven't been able to get it to work.

Any recommendations..?

Let me preempt this with....I know very little about scanners.

Having said that, The Grecom scanner is supposed to be the bees knees,
I do NOT know however if it will display tones.

My FT-7800, FT-7900, FT-60 can search and lock in on tones.

tune to the freq
select ENC/DEC
TN FRQ
hold the scroll up or scoll down button until it scans

I don't know if my GRE 600 can do it or not, that thing is not user friendly LOL

The 780 you have will do it but it's slow.

I just need a few local 6m repeaters that will pick up a 150hz tone...

I think that's what I have figured out. It takes several seconds. The transmission needs to be long enough..

Thanks...

Generally, radios that have CTCSS search just scan through all the tones to try to find one that decodes. Takes CTCSS probably 200 milliseconds to decode, so maybe 5 per second. So can take a while.

There is a "reader" that decodes CTCSS and DCS immediately without scanning, but it's more a piece of test equipment and not a general receiver.

they both are pretty consistent.

Are you trying to find the tones for a particular repeater -ham, PD, ems or fire?
