Hope everyone had a great Christmas and has a safe and happy new year!

I posted this in the Safes and Home Security forum but think that this is a fitting subject for survival as well.

My questions for the hive are about security system signs. Not the actual systems but was seeking opinions on whether or not it is a good idea to place the signs when one does not actually have the system.
Do you think they can be a deterent on their own? Any bad aspect other than the obvious of not actually having the system?

Here is my opinion.  They are a deterrent to the casual criminal.  Just like the fake security cameras.

If you have something worthwhile and a professional criminal wants it, look out.  Better get the real deal.

Most criminals are casual, lazy and not that smart.

Good deterrence, and a cheap way to do it.

I agree with you both.
Wondering, could there be any legal ramifications?
If said compnay were to see the sign and question it, would they have authority to remove it?
I figure it's free advertising for them

I don't think they would remove it because like you said its free advertisement, it would take to much effort on their part to figure out weather or not you really had the system.

They're all about free advertising.

My current house had an innactive security system and signs/stickers. I considered reactivating and had an alarm salesperson give me a quote. First words out of his mouth were "95% of the deterrent is the signs/stickers." Needless to say, I never went with the system and just stuck with my existing signs/stickers. I'm not sure how accurate his statement was, but it made sense at the time. I'm guessing he'll never win the salesman of the year award

Anyway, I'm still considering paying for a new system + monitoring. I hate the feeling of being away from home for an extended period and not knowing for sure if my home and possessions are safe. The added peace of mind may be worth the added cost.

real is better....but signs say "go to the next house" to most crooks.

"These premises under video surveillance" works well too.
