I don’t know if this belongs in the ham forum or here so if I’ve chosen poorly please feel free to move it.  I searched this forum for “shortwave” and “short wave” but got no hits.  Hopefully this hasn’t been covered too much already.

I think  that we can all agree that  international radio reception could be quite an asset in an extended emergency situation.  Also the ability to monitor aviation traffic could  be very useful.  So, I started shopping ebay and local flea markets and came up with a Grundig G6 Buzz Aldrin edition and a Sony ICF-2002.  They are in good shape and came with the operation manuals. The reviews at eham were positive for both.  I’ve got just under $50 in the two combined.  Are any of you guys shortwave listeners?  I’d really like some advice on specific frequencies for European and African news as well as the best air traffic frequencies to listen to.  I searched the web and found lots of local stuff but the calls for police and fire just aren’t that interesting to me. I’d really like news, talk and music from other continents.  I live near a regional airport  (HAO) and found some of those frequencies but I’ve gotten no results.  The stuff I found online gives 121.0000 as my local air traffic channel but there is never anything going on.  I’ve done basic google searches but the info I’ve gotten there hasn’t been very helpful.   I like asking questions here because the answers are very specific .  One other thing.  Both of these radios have a receptacle for an external antennae.  Is this as simple as using a mono headphone plug and attaching a length of copper wire?  Do I need to ground this wire before I run it outside?  I’ve been able to pick up some Spanish  stations and while I cant understand what they are saying its still fun to listen while I reload.

I know HAM is the way to go and I’ve already purchased a Yaesu radio and an arrow jpole (on the recommendation of the guys in the HAM forum)  for the roof.  I’m studying when I have time and hope to take the test before the end of the year.

Thanks in advance guys

Best Regards.
