Not really a BOV but makes a great utility truck around the farm. 6x6 with hydraulic lockers for all wheels, great ground clearance, 4 cylinder air cooled engine. Less than 16 feet long and 5'9" wide.  Ambulance box comes off in about a half hour leaving a ten foot bed with a 3300 pound capacity. May convert an ambulance box into a camper. Going to make a 10 foot flat wood stake bed for the truck.  Insulated fiberglass box is made to be air evacuated by helicopter while holding five men - plenty strong and easy to move by the lift hooks.

I'm lucky enough to have a pretty good selection of choice. I have my Yukon, and have a receiver hitch bike carrier for the dirtbike so I can have both. If things get too congested, drop off the bike and take off.   Of course, if speed is a necessity, the govt announces they're dropping a nuclear device on DFW and I have 1 hour to create as much distance as possible from ground zero, I have my R1. I'll only have my backpack and maybe a rifle over my shoulder, but she'll easily do 140mph as long as I've got the nuts to keep the throttle open.

I have the same truck as Boomer, except mine is an automatic and it is red. I had the transmission beefed up for reliability with some Goerends tranny parts. I agree on what he said about the 94-early 98 trucks with the P pump. That is why I purposely hunted the truck I bought. It was a 1.5 year search. I had a 91 Dodge 4x4 with the CTD in it, which still makes a great BOV, just not a good EDD. My 97 rides great, has been updated with just about every upgradeable item that is known to cause a problem. And I can get 20 mpg if I drive it right, tow 13000 lbs, and still outrun most cars stop light to stoplight if the urge hits me. I have a #8 plate in it now, and when the boost builds up, hold on. I like the idea of being able to easily run on whatever kind of cooking oil I can get my hands on if I HAVE to. Mine only has 96K miles on it, so it should last a long time. Eng208 |
Here's a few pics of what I'm starting out with. It's really my winter beater, but I'd trust it to go most anywhere. It'd definetly be the vehicle of choice between my mustang and this. It's a 1991 toyota. 22re with a manual trans. 33x12.5 tires and rhino liner for paint. It doesnt go anywhere fast but it does go everywhere I need it to.  I'd like to change up the bed to allow for more stuff to be carried with it at all times, but we'll see how that goes, probably in the spring. |
Why not, it would fit right in with most of the other soccer mom rigs, mall runners, and vehicles so extensively modified and specialized as to be virtually useless outside of an extremely narrow niche. |

The way it sits now I get roughly 13 mph in town (not much driving on the highway) The rack on top is easily removable and seems to do a bit better when not installed. I have 33" MTR's with a 4.5" Rubicon Express lift which pound for pound makes it one of the most capable vehicles on the road. The Rubicon is capable in 60% of its environments as my Yamaha Rhino is closer to 90% but they both have there trade offs. |
Wow...I guess there are a few Hummer Haters out there. Although a H2 might not be a idea bov if you were traveling over three hundred miles (if you need to travel over 300 hundred miles in a bov, any full sized rig wouldn't be my first choice), it does have a few good qualities. It has good ground clearence, capable of hauling tons of equipment/supplies, its good offroad (flame away..), easy to work on, etc. I've own a fair number of trucks/suvs over the years and all of them had their flaws/problems . For example, the last Dodge pickup I owned was less than idea as a bov. It had poor gas mileage, wasn't that great offroad, and was plagued with mechanical problems. But here in the mountains of Kentucky, it got me where I wanted to go. Same thing with the H2. It would get me to anywhere I needed to go. Alot depends upon the individual needs of the driver (such as bol) as to what would be a good bov. I guess the main thing to remember was stated earlier in the thread, any bov is better than walking. |

I'm not sure if you have had the same experience or not, but I get flipped off about once a week, usually from Prius drivers with a Hillary bumper sticker . I needed a vehicle that I could drive to clients and present a professional image. My other truck is a Ford F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with the 7.3 Diesel. I love the truck, but the bubba image didn't work for me and the heavy diesel engine causes the front end to sink every time it hits a soft patch. The H2 I think is a reasonable compromise between offroad capability and professional image. I drive a lot of cars in the course of business travel and the H2 is by far the most comfortable truck I have ever had. Plus I really like pissing off the Hummer Haters.

Hope this doesnt turn into a Jeep vs Hummer thread....That horse has been beat to dead on a couple of different forums. My last suv was in fact a Jeep Cherokee. My wife totaled it last winter. It was very poor in the muck. And I know of a couple of Jeeps that were pulled out of the muck by my Hummer
