My garden overfloweth with Hubbard squash this season.  I just picked them and the main vines had dried up.  Right now, they are curing in the sun but one thing puzzles me.  When I harvested them, I cut the stem 2-3 inches from the squash, but there is a rather large hole through the center of the vine going into the squash.  Do I plug this to keep the squash from drying out?  Never grew Hubbards before and have never seen this before with other squash.  Thanks for any ideas.

I think many squash vines are hollow.  Though I have not grown hubbards.

The hollow stems are part of the issue with pests and squash.  It's a good environment for a pest to plant eggs in there and then have the eggs hatch and thrive.

Others with more experience growing hubbards may have better info.
