Would a chest like this one be good to store stuff in for long periods of time?
I'm thinking of putting one at my BOL. That way I can some more stuff other than what's in my GHB, and or BOB. |

Don't take my advice in making a purchase on this item, but are you partially buying this because of its antiquity?
Secondly, it states that it was used in transportation of medical supplies so you can assume that even the older boxes were meant to keep moisture out. KT_Cobra |

KT_Cobra I honestly could care less that its an "antique". I'm looking for something sturdy, and atleast water tight that I can keep things like clothes, batteries and things like that in for extended periods of time with out having to worry about it. I know there is a foot locker on that page as well. Was hoping for something that could be sealed a little bit tighter than that. If you can suggest a rubbermaid chest, or something else, I am all ears. |
| If the gaskets are still good iAND you can latch it closed it will be water resistant. Basically there is a rubber gasket involved. The add said some latches may be damaged. If you can't latch it it will not seal tight enough to keep moisture out. We used these and a double chest in my medical unit 1985-1995. they may have been used else where but the only place I saw them was medical units. |
| If you get a good one then they are virtually indestructible. My reserve unit had several that never saw the outside of the gear cage for over 10 years. We were instructed to send them to DRMO before we deployed. Somebody got a great deal if they got one of ours. You can replace the gaskets and the latches are just pop riveted on so they can be replaced/repaired as well. |

if the gaskets and latches are still in good condition its probably Ok to use for that purpose. my suspicion is it will be pretty heavy to move around when full of gear. it might be more practical to get several smaller boxes of similar construction. I'm thinking of just leaving it in one place. Hopefully NOT moving it. |

I think it would rock
actually I was looking at bidding on this Medical chests up for auction at Fort Riley but I don't need 95 of them.....but if you got them for $3.50 or $4 a piece....you could surely make some money on them.... |
