What do you folks think about trying to network w/ established survivalists. By established I mean those who have local communities of some sort who have some plans and provisions. I have friends and family in town, and many of them are indeed to survivalist themes, but we've never really done anything concrete as a group. I wonder if I should try to somehow find a local group and start to establish some familiarity w/ them. Then could I more easily ease my less-paranoid-than-me friends into this group. What are your comments on this type of an approach? What are ways to meet up w/ these people who tend to be by their nature discreet? |
good luck, the only ones that will talk to you openly will be ATF trollin for militia types![]() seriously watch out who you talk to and what you say, even if your not a nut (your name says otherwise |
Very Big +1 |
What could they turn him in for? Unless he's stockpiling something illegal, he's broken no laws. If I catch any flak from the sheeple I just give it right back to them. Most of them are not nearly as good at taking it as they are at giving it and they usually turn tail and run at the first sign of anybody with a backbone. |

You have good points. I live in Jax, and according to blast maps, it is not a good place to be Anyway, there are alot of other things to be worried about I guess, things that would be leave a city in existence to flee from. Really when it comes down to it, for anything worse than a hurricane/loosing power for a week scenario, the solution is for the members of the group to get out of the city/suburbs area to a property comfortably outside of the city. To have a nice place to go that is big enough and well supplied enogh to take care of the members and the extra people that will come along, would take alot of $ and that takes some people ponying up. The cheaper solution would be to live in a little hamlet of good country folk and you have just add water community to survive in. I dunno, I just feel like somehting is coming down the pipe and I am ill prepared and relatively alone. |

best way is this network in other words go to a camp out. while the camp outs that are hosted here never have any sort of "recruitment" shit going on. You do meet folks from all over the state. Over time you build relationships with these folks. Be it becuase your close to each other or they are in fact in some sort of established survival "group. Once you meet someone local or that you seem to "hit it off with" normally you can build from there. Think of it as redundant planning. Evene if it is nothing more than " hey tom can i leave a rubber maid full of junk at your place for "what ifs".." Thats a back up to your plans. Even if it means that you have place to camp out after a hurricane, stop over to refuel or even to cath some sleep with out having to watch your back. its worth it! Meet folks, talk with folks. and go from there. ATF? worries? unless your asking about FA/nazi's/alieans/bombs/cans/FA aghain and where ,how, why, building/buying there is nothing illegal about grouping up and prepareing. Keep your shit legal and you wont have any worries. I met several folks in your AO area that are prep'rs,and a few of those are losely connected to others that are like minded... Network while you can. There are alot of FLA members here,,ALOT....and ALOT of fla events that happen each month( see the HT forum) .....so go network LOL... |
| There are several families in our area that are preparanoids. We meet every so often and bring in SF type meals from our stores. This allows others to try new foods or at least different recipes. As we meet other people that prep we invite them to come to the meal. As/if we grow comfortable with the new people we can then"get more indepth" in our discussions. Sort of a slow way to build a network but fairly safe. |

I think the only kind of "survival group" that would be worth a damn is one that comes about naturally. That kind of leaves out the whole ASG Survivalist Directory approach. Natural associations of people who have more in common than mere "aspirations of survivalism". Relatives, neighbors, fellow church members, etc.. Attempting to band together with people who have substantially nothing else in common other than their desire to "survive" isn't that great of an idea, IMHO. What will keep you together when challenges (or just plain boredom) arises? Along with plenty of other unpleasant probabilities, it just seems like a recipe for failure. As far as I am concerned, associating with people (in a survival context, at least) who do not share some basic foundational principles is pointless. "Great, Osama. I'm really glad that we could share that foxhole together during the apocalypse. Our survival has guaranteed that we can continue to propagate our genes" ![]() Just a few random thoughts, directed at nothing in particular. |

Than you Protus and ..SgtD. I think I am going to put out a personals add: Single White Male seeking other people to share long term committed relationships. Likes: long walks on the beach while pondering Tsunamis and hurricanes, playing w/ Ham Radios, jaring, stockpiling and otherwise hoarding, deep discussions about the Illuminati and Federal Reserve, spending quite time together in my bomb shelter etc. Dislikes: hippies and people who talk on their cell phones loudly Man, I am so funny. Seroiusly though, I guess I just need to follow up on my theoretical conversaions w/ my friends more and look into networking w/ people who are more actively doing survivalist type things in my area like camping I guess. But it is true that I have to have more in common w/ them than than just precous paranioa. |
Camping is a good way to lead into talkinga bout being prepared. be it about mini survival kits " hey joe.. ya know i heard about those guy loston that mountain,,soi bought this.....(or made this..)... kit how ya like it/what ya think..." lil way to find out if they are the least way into this. Or you can just have the camp fire what if chats.. bringup movies..TV shows... dude you watch that crazy show jericho,,,man iwoulda done some different shit than that.... For example. i have a co worker, he wants to start backpacking. He has showed alot of intrest in going on our next Fla SF hike,, and has even stated he needs to start a hurricane box. While not prepping for a big "event" he is feeling out that area, and will hopefully be one less sheep we all have to worry about. Get involved with them, and yes camp, shoot, talk.... meet fellow board members at gun shows, swap meets, shoots, camps, church. Like gny said you need a common "bond" so to speak, and theo nly way your gonna find that is by spending time with those ppl..talking and doing stuff. |

You just need to keep your eyes open for "indicators" and be willing to take a chance when you first meet someone(it might take years in between opportunities). I was stationed at Fort Benning back in the late 1980's and saw a letter to the editors in Survival Guide, and it was from another guy stationed at Fort Benning, so I looked him up and got in touch with him. I figured if he read Survival Guide we might have something in common, and we did. We've both gotten out of the Army and settled in different parts of the country(I'm in Arkansas and he's in North Carolina), but have kept in touch since then. Every once in a while one of us will find a good deal and we'll let the other know about it. |
| I wonder if they are still doing that FDCC shoot in Lake City. I know Hawkey used to go to that. OF course, I am not necessarily looking to find all these people at the range b/c I am not trying to make a militia group (which is kind of Illegal in FL, talk about unconstitutional!). |
| Yes, they still do the FDCC shoots. You should check out the HT forum. |

I am not trying to make a militia group (which is kind of Illegal in FL, talk about unconstitutional!)." I have absolutely no interest in joining any militia either, but I'm not sure your correct about your statement. A lot of people get that sort of thing confused with the "Florida Paramilitary act"- which states that any group of people getting together for the sole purpose of OFFENSIVE training, i.e, a group of guys getting together in full paraphanelia with rifles, etc. that are training in ambushes, etc. Course most people that do any sort of weapons training, knife defense etc. do it for the DEFENSIVE side of things Lot's of good, like minded and sane (the most important criteria) folks in Florida to network with. Get out and MEET them at a hike, gunshow, shoot, etc. |

What was called the "state Militias" which were semi official Hoplite style militias that were prevalent in most states in the earlyier 20th centry, but were distinct from the national guard, would be illegal in FL, at least if a AG didn't like the group. The law has somehting in it about the group being in some sort of somehting that could be called a uniform. Some have suggested that a montley assortment of hunting and .mil camo on a group could qualify for that, or even the get-up that skin head types wear. Well, maybe this will keep ex-convict black muslim groups from forming a Jihad training camp in FL. I heard there are at least 15 in very rural places across the contry that live in these almost self subsistent camp/compounds w/ firing ranges (I thought ex-Cons could't have guns???) Good thing for these fellas that they are not white and christian'ish |
|
Good thing for these fellas that they are not white and christian'ish" No doubt. Janet Reno would be on them like parkinsons on her leg.. She'd probably want to burn them out for the good of the children or something humanitarian like that. Worse comes to worse, sponsor a picnic/BBQ meet and greet event for arfcommers at a small public range or park. Post it here on the survival forum. Haven't met a survivalist yet that didn't like to eat.... |
