While not physical practice for survival, this seems like a practical survival simulation that everyone can enjoy.

I absolutely love playing ARMA2...
It's a MILITARY SIMULATOR, none of that unrealistic COD/MW crap or the ADD-Addled Battlefield3 stuff...  We're talking real physics, real ballistics, real wind, real target leads, and real military tactics!   Use of cover, flanking, suppressing fire, and MOST IMPORTANTLY - TEAMWORK!!!
Many games like BF3 claim to be the most 'realistic' and that their design 'rewards teamwork'...  Then 100,000 idiots run amok and die 30 times per game, only to be re-spawned in 5 seconds, right up in the thick of the battle again so they can keep shooting, keep pushing buttons, keep feeding their adrenaline.  Die again, rinse repeat.  There really IS no reward for TEAMWORK like in ARMA2...
In ARMA2, you start out on a ship or in the air base, you load up with weapons, ammo, a pack, and you wait 5 minutes with a group for a teammate to fly back in one of a few helicopters.  You board the helo, you wait 5 more minutes for them to fly you low & safely to the combat zone, they don't drop you in the thick of the fight - or you'll be shot out of the sky.  They drop you on the edge of the village/city, and you have to fight your way into the objective city/vil, and then clear it of hostiles...  Door to door, street to street, yard by yard.  You don't run blindly through a door, or across a street, you use REAL team tactics - or you're going to die!  You're going to be patient, shoot move communicate with team members, and you'll slice the pie before going through that door...  You'll wait for your M249 teammate to lay down suppressing / covering fire before you run across the wide open main street to cover.  You'll wait until your two snipers are strategically in place behind cover to provide overwatch as you approach the village...  You'll do whatever it takes to NOT DIE because Dying means you roll around on the ground for 30 to 120 seconds bleeding out until either a team-mate can get there to bandage you up, drag you out of the field of fire, or you die, and 'respawn' waaaaay back at the airfield, and you have to wait another 5 to 10 minutes for a helo to return to you, and another 5 minutes in flight - hoping you're not shot down on the way there (and have to wait & respawn again)...  It's that waiting that deters the ADD run & gun kiddies.  That breeds a more serious & dedicated, older group of gamers that take it more seriously, and thus make the game more realistic.
Not to mention the AI was programmed brilliantly.
The DayZ mod kicks ass, in my opinion, but it DOES cause more strife amongst players because just like in the real world - you can either TEAM UP with a group of friends, and stand a MUCH higher chance of surviving... OR you can pretend it's a good idea to be a 'lone wolf' and KILL other players for their weapons, food, water, ammo, and medical supplies.  Only for that gunshot to draw in zombies from hundreds of yards around you, and you just essentially killed yourself by giving away your position.
I like that it's a game similar to Fallout New Vegas Hardcore mode where you actually HAVE TO EAT, and HAVE TO DRINK, and have to BANDAGE wounds, and you are often rewarded for stealthy avoidance of some situations, and you're rewarded greatly for clearing zombies out of a hostile area.
If you run into another stranger online, you can't trust them until you get to know them through cooperative interaction, etc...

One video shows actual gameplay of the DayZ mod, and it's definitely interesting.  What's also interesting is seeing how frequently the survival-ignorant people die in this simulator.  They'll selfishly shoot another player for their weapons & ammo, and as a result nobody will trust them, they will earn a reputation as highwaymen, robbers, infiltrators, etc...  People will refuse to be around them, and force them to lone-wolf through the game.  As a result, they'll typically be over-run by zombies at some point, run out of food or ammo, and die...  Often.
Eventually they begin to hate the game for their own poor decisions, their own selfish acts, and the fact that they're dying all the time.  So they stop playing.  So, like in real life, eventually, many of the people that make poor decisions, and would otherwise be terrible at survival in a true post-apocalypse situation eventually do sort of 'die off' in that their interest in the game quickly wanes and they quit playing.  They'll go back to Battlefield3, or Call of Duty, and shoot enemies in the face, die, respawn, shoot teammates in the back, die respawn, and continue their ignorant cycle...
I think ARMA 2 itself is an incredibly beneficial tool for simulation of other potential tactics.  The AI and online players never react the same twice in a given mission scenario...
A very fun game indeed...  can't wait for Arma3 to come out in a month or two...
