Even hatcheries, I think. Normally you keep the little ones separate at first anyway, so that's not as likely to harm a flock, but bringing in larger birds is just dangerous. It's a shame. |

My home brew stuff is aging well. My Apple Cider Vinegar is going well so far I think. I've moved it over from the airlock to cheesecloth/muslin over the top. Seem to like it much better than the airlock as recommended in here: Good film on the bottom and top!  Of course, the wine is still aging itself as well:  Won't be long and I'll be looking to bottle these before long. |

Took a break from building new chicken tractors to knock together a shooting bench for the range. Made it belly-button high, so its convenient to shoot from a standing/leaning position - and the bench seat is removable, reversable and height adjustable.  |

Thanks. We bought it back in 1986 for $70,000. It was a good buy even back then. It even came with a pond that I dug out to make it bigger. I stock with 75- 9" trout in the spring. Towards the end summer I try to fish it out before the fish eating birds get them as the pond starts to get shallow. Washington was a free state way back then. It has changed as all know because of all the LIBTARDS moving here. We are staying put. We love this place and I have a lot of blood and $$ into this homestead and they are not going to drive me out. Sorry for the rant.  |

I have a serious problem with hardware. Old hardware. I have sort of a "rust meter" I guess. If there's more than 50 percent rust on a screw, I toss it. UNLESS.. Unless it's some kind of funky weird head screw or bolt that might fit something I forgot. I dunno what's wrong with me. I'm like women who quilt. Except I don't quilt. They collect tiny scraps of fabric. I collect miscellaneous hardware. I might need therapy for this.  A few nights ago...a glass of wine and sorting hardware.  Dear God I'm a weird girl. |

I don't want to get too 'organized' that it are so many separations that it becomes more work just looking at each one to find the specific size I seek. I'd love to hear from anyone who has developed a 'balanced' workable system |

I sort for type of screw (countersink, wide/narrow head, Phillips/Torx, etc.), size, color etc. How I sort depends on quantity, with small amounts going in little zip-lock type bags. Larger quantities stay in their box, or go in a larger jar. Here's what I have out in the shed;  This is in the toolbox that I keep in my closet;  One of the containers;

| Most of my crops on my homestead didn't produce much this year. One local farmer said the one freeze we had early spring really affected the growth of the fruit. My grapes are still too young to really produce, though they are irrigated so at least they didn't dehydrate. I'm hoping next year will be better. I'm also going to be sure we are better about fertilizing on a more consistent schedule/regimen. We were pretty slack this year. I'm sure that also didn't help. |

| We are going to try something different this year. We like the Mrs. Wages pizza sauce mix. What I don’t like it using pint or half pint jars. I hate to put the leftover sauce in the fridge and wait until the next one is made. So we are going to try 4oz jars this year. I bought a couple of the 12 pack Ball jars to mess with later. One jar should be enough to make one pizza. |

My wife and I walked our property yesterday and are pretty excited about the blooms on our fruit trees. We have a good harvest coming if we don't have a late freeze to kill them off like last year. I also installed a trellis for her raspberries that grew where I don't want them. They love it there so I'm relenting and letting them stay. Putting in the posts feels like defeat though. We have a ton to do this year. I'm building her a greenhouse we got from Costco (Yardistry, or something like that) and need to put a bunch of posts in the ground in a meadow we are turning into a vineyard / fruit grove. I will have to do it all manually it seems. :( |

I supported Canada last week and it got here today. Hopefully it will really help with my land management. It is a tree puller that has been heavily recommended to me. I'll put it to work after I get off work today to test it out. My number of sweet gum and poplar is just absurd. |

PSA: Top your fuel tank off. Especially if you know you're not going to use the tractor for awhile. Didn't use the tractor much this winter and then went out of town for months for work. Left tractor with 1/4 tank. Came back and had instant water in fuel problems. There's no drain on the bottom of the tank and the inline electric lift pump isn't strong enough to pick up the water sitting at the bottom by itself (I drained alot of fuel that looked fine this way). So I had to run the tractor with a load on it for a few minutes, periodically checking the water separator bowl and then stop it, drain and clean the bowl, put it back on, and repeat. About the 4th or 5th time, the bowl only went about 1/4 up to the dump line with water (there's a plastic ring that floats in the water). Blech. Best I can figure, it sat long enough during alot of temperature changes with a mostly empty tank that it developed alot of condensation on the walls of the tank. |

It has been a while since I updated this thread about my mushroom farm. We kinda forgot about it. :\ Not sure how many mushrooms we lost but I know a bunch were. My wife remembered today when she went walking and harvested almost 2 pounds of them.  I asked my wife which log they came from so I would know which strain of Shiitake these are, but she didn't pay attention to it. Either way, it is between $20 and $40 worth of mushrooms right there. |

(I apologize if you did a thread and I don't remember. It's been a hard year. A lot has been deleted from my brain.  )

Turns out, there were a bunch - all but a few dehydrated in place. Hopefully we catch the next flush.   |

You must not have termites where you live. I can't do that or my logs would all be gone. Mine are all laying on things off the ground. Even then we have to check regularly for mud tubes.

My wife has gotten the bug about black walnuts. I mean, foraging like a mad woman. I think she said she is well over 400 so far with only a few dozen at most that were bad and floated. She needed me to rig up something that would help her dry them so they are now near my deep sink. I took a PVC pipe and zip tied a keyring to it. Then used paracord, S-carabiners, and more keyrings and rigged them up. She put the hulled nuts in melon bags and now they hang in front of a fan in my basement near the deep sink: She has a few hundred to remove from the hulls Monday. She doesn't want to chance dying her hands before church tomorrow. |
