So I went down today to try my hand at upgrading, I missed the test by one question the first go. Upon taking the test the second time I felt a little more confident on my answers. The administering VE walks up with the test and asks if I wanted to take it again The SO passed the Tech the first try, and she went ahead and took the test for general. She did not study for general and really had no interest in it. She did not make the general but now she will be waiting on the ULS to get updated for her call sign. Oh and Ar-jedi..... It is your fault! SO studied hard for several weeks, no technical or electronics background. No study guide, just QRZ practice tests and tests on www.aa9pw.com I studied for several week doing the same thing, no study guide, lots of time on Google to try and understand more. There is a huge difference between General and Extra exams! Thanks everyone for the motivation to get this done. |

Now my priorities as follows,
VE Accreditation Morse Code! I left the testing site and went to some country flea market and antique meet, I was able to find a couple of nice strait razors I have been wanting. The guy who had them happened to have a lot of old AM radio's and some old phones, So I to ask him if he ever happens to come across any keys? He points to the wall and said "Like that one" Sitting on the wall is a J-38 key that has seen some use, on a wood board that says USS Missouri on it. The key is dirty but in working order, and even has an original wire and plug. Like he said he cannot confirm it was off the ship, but he had a 29 dollar price tag on it, I got is for 25 bucks! Good price for it and just how I wanted one, not some NOS part. |

All cleaned up and restored. http://www.ebay.com/sch/azroadrunners/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 Check the bottom of your J-38. Does it have the Lionel logo? Yes, some J-38's were made by Lionel, the toy train company. I gave one to my son, a model railroader, and formerly Signal Corps. It has the orange Sig Corps acceptance stamp as well as the Lionel logo. |

No not the Lionel one, I have been looking for one also.
http://k6ix.net/J-38/Types/ARH.html This is likely the one I have, although mine is missing the shorting bar, I am not going to try and replace any parts, just going to clean it up a little and use it! I was looking at that Ebay seller earlier and was surprised at the prices, think I may pick up another one from him. Just need to learn how to use it now. ETA: Made link hot |

Most of my railroad key and sounder collection is from AZRoadrunners.
OK, I can't do Morse for $#!+ but I like railroad telegraph stuff.
I need a "candlestick resonator". I may end up making one. And I would love to have a gravity cell jar and the metal electrodes, the "crowfoot" and such. I want to eventually hook it all up in a display case. I have a source of cloth covered wire like they used back then. |
