So I m sitting here drinking coffee and taking a couple practice tests before I drive 2 hours to take my Tech and General tests... I have been studying hard for a couple weeks now and have been missing about 5 or less on the practice tests on AA9PWs website... Man... the anticipation is killing me.. Wish me luck...... WP 73 |

Do what I did.
Go into the test with the idea that you want to do it solely to get over the "test jitters." Helped a lot. In fact, every time I tested I did this, even when testing for Extra. This was back when the 20 wpm test was required. I passed it! Good luck to you! |

First trans was an 80 meter ARC-5.  ..

The BC-348 was easy to convert. It mainly involved removing the dynamotor, separating it from its base, and building an AC power supply on the base. It was a solid receiver, built on a cast aluminum chassis. They were used in B-17 and B-24 aircraft.
The ARC-5, not so much. The actual conversion to a ham transmitter was relatively easy. Getting it to play nice with the neighborhood TV sets was a bear. A popular conversion was to remove the front panel, hack off the front 2/3 of the chassis (which contained the two final tubes), and rejoin the back third (the VFO) with the panel. It made a very stable VFO for use with entry level transmitters such as the Heathkit AT-1. The ARC-5 transmitter had a companion receiver which was popular with Novices. It sold for around $7 and was easy to convert. I bought one to replace the regenerative receiver. It was more stable, but had an IF bandwidth you could drive a team of Clydesdales through. I swapped between the two receivers depending on how crowded the band was.
