Sorry if these were covered in the test, I've slept a few times since then.
1) Carrying a photocopy of the wallet license is acceptable? Or do I need cut out the original and carry it? 2) I'm moving from FCC Region 5 to Region 9. Do I need to file for a change to my callsign after I move? |

Don't know about number 1, but you are no longer required to have region specific callsign. You do have to update the FCC with your new address. |

A photocopy is ok. You don't even have to keep your license on you anymore, as
far as the FCC is concerned, your license is on ULS. The main argument for carrying your license is if you get hassled for having a radio for some reason and need to "prove" you're a ham. (Again, legally, that proof is in ULS, not the paper license.) I don't carry my license with me, one less thing in the wallet. In case you're curious, here's the FCC saying exactly this on their web site. No need to change call, it follows you wherever you go, just like phone numbers do now. I'm pretty sure you can change it if you wish, though, if you want a 2X3 for a "vanity" callsign in your new region.

Yes... there are some states I am told that police have at times hassled hams for having a "police scanner" and sometimes seizing and even destroying their radios. I imagine going through an airport with radio gear might get some raised eyebrows from TSA. Having a copy of your license should take care of any problems. You can't expect them to know to look up FCC / ULS and find you listed. But there is no legal requirement for you to have your license with you. As far as the call sign question, others are correct there, too, you only need to keep FCC updated on your address. That way they can communicate with you by mail. No need to change call sign. You can do the address change on the ULS yourself. |
