I was looking at Craiglist and found a guy selling 55gal Poly Drums for $10 each. I called and he said they had held handsoap, but had been cleaned out and sanitized at 375+ Deg. Would these be acceptable for water storage in my basement? I have been buying 4gal jugs at Sam's club and refilling my kids Punch Jugs after cleaning them out. But its getting expensive for water and sucking up alot of space. 1 of these would equal what I have put away so far. If nothing else I could use the for rainwater collection for my garden,
Thanks |
| Do yourself a favor. Buy newly manufactured drums for potable water. Most drums go to drum recyclers after each use. And they may have been used many, many times, and each time with something different before you get them. There are some really nasty things out there that can be absorbed by the plastic. Not enough to effect the next chemical used in them, but nasty enough that you don't want to even take a chance of having some leach out into your potable water. |
| I agree with everyone preceding me; you don't know. I work in the chemical production world, specifically dealing with bulk production (500 gallon totes down to 2.5L bottles), and I personally do not mess around with used drums that I do not know the history of. |

You know, folks have been bred and brainwashed by every US institution [.gov, .edu, TE-VE, media, .Hollycrap, employers, etc] the past 25 years or so, to be scared of their own shadow. If someone dropped a flourescent light in a school it would likely be evacuated and the Left's useful idiots would be directed there in their white suits and respirators to sweep it up. Kids likely aren't allowed to build electronic circuits because they might need to solder [lead The kid that built that shed on a trailer, I didn't see any power tools and likely his dad knew that if the kid showed he was allowed to use them, he might be put into state custody and the dad locked up. This incredible distortion of human competence is a small part of the Left's agenda to politically control our country by stupidfying the Sheeple and it obviously is working brilliantly. Many folks nowadays are so friggin stupid I honestly wonder how they can earn a living without being on the .gov dole. Just use some common sense ––-that's the stuff that less and less folks anymore have much left of Go buy about 6 of the barrels, they sound like a good deal. I'd have no hesitation and I used to play with mercury my dentist gave me at 8, used a mercury diffusion pump as a teen, used a soldering iron at 9 yrs and held solder in my mouth between making joints [not the weed kind the shit-brains are so fond of nowadays] As far as the folks who have been brainwashed to have little common sense, try to learn from them so you have a better chance of surviving. |

This rampant brainwashed fraidy-cat STUPIDITY is EXACTLY what, in my best guess, within 10 years is going to result in the ban of ammo with any content of lead.
Look at the idiocy in the Jap- Radiation threads all over. How did folks become so fearful of nothing. They've been friggin brainwashed to not be able to think for themselves and instead believe any sort of non-sense. Remember the Chinese ballistic missle that was -supposedly- launched off the coast of LA last year and EVERYONE, it seems, believed it really happened? What does that tell you abt stupidity? Now, given folks gullibility due to their 'bred and educated in' ignorance, how in the world can they make an informed judgement of the state of our economy -that is close to causing a mother of all SHTF's and that will catch most blindsided, let alone know what blue barrel to buy? |

EXPY always has sound advice.
You can clean the barrels and dry them. Then you can use them for storing food or other items that are already sealed in a bag, if you don't trust the prior contents. This will allow you sealed storage from bugs and rodents. If you have a basement to store them in, that would be best. If you had to store them in an outdoor shed, that would still work, but due to heat, you may lose a few years of quality life on the products. At least the blue barrel will block sunlight, which impacts most food quality long term. that is a great deal, if in tampa, i'd buy a bunch. Here they go for $ 20 or more and they aren't cleaned. Best of luck |
| I bought four barrels off of craiglist. I was told they had contained coke syrup. I have tried everything under the sun to take the smell out of the barrels without any luck. I tried bleach, soda etc. I don't think there is anything I haven't tried. Still smell. I will not be using them for my water supply but I will be able to use them for rain water, not pottable water storage for bathing etc.. I think that the best way is to buy new barrels for your water supply. If you know of something I have not used feel free to let me know. |

Have you tried leaving them out in bright sunlight for a few days. Also, for bathing we often don't use 'potable' water. Just for drinking, cooking, etc. |

Thanks EXPY. I needed that. "Our Country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any AMERICA because some foreign soldier will invade us and take our women and breed a heartier race!" Lt. Gen Chesty Puller I'd like to invite Gen. Puller for a walkthough of some US shopping centers. Or WalMarts. |

I'm sick of the welfare state that we have become!! Sorry for the thread hijack!!! |

I have another thread I started a few days ago and it is pretty much like this one. Thanks to all of the replies. I am sure there is a learning curve here and I for one will find what I am looking for. I will make an informed decision before I put my-or my families health at risk-before I purchase my water storage system. I am sure most of us have put things into our mouths, that were questionable, and didn't think twice about it. I am here to learn from the mistakes of others, as I can't make all the mistakes myself, can I? Hopefully not, and once again thanks for all the information you guys share with the rest of us. |
