I have been looking at a water filter cheaper than dirt offers, does anyone know anything about how good it really is?

Also I am wanting one for bob, Katadyn Vario  http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/CAMP175-1.html or Katadyn Hiker Pro http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/CAMP179-1.html.

I am looking for the best value, but I want quality.

How about a different filter then?

I've got two... a MSR Hyperflow and a First Need.

I use the first need when I'm certain I'm going to have to filter from something really disgusting. For everything else, the Hyperflow does me just fine and weighs a helluva lot less... but it does require more TLC, as in, very regular backflushing.

That CTD monolithic filter has recieved good reviews here by many in the SG section (though sold by another outlet). I haven't used it myself, and opted for the more proven Katadyn Ceradyn system (much more costly, though). I am looking at getting one of these as a backup, myself. So far, reviews seem positive, though I don't see it filtering some of the smaller, nastier beasties with that filter.

I've got a Katadyn Vario, which is in my BO preps. I've tested it, and it seems OK. Water taste is not bad, though I haven't used it on anything really nasty yet, and I didn't experience the backflow and leakages that others reportedly have with it. Seems like it might be hit or miss on that aspect. I think you'd be OK with it or the Hiker Pro if you're looking in that class.

get the sawyer viral filter.  It filters all bacteria & almost all viruses mechanically & lasts indefinately w/ an occasional back flush.  The nano-tube one.  No others need apply.  Using those ceramic filters would be like taking a horse after the car was invented.
