| Ok folks I am looking for a good water filter for my SHTF supplies what are some brands to look for. My requirements are must be big enough for 4 people and prefer it to be a hand pump model. I looked at one and it was around 300 bucks and replacements filters were 100 bucks a piece whcih is to rich for my blood. I would like to buy a filter syatem and several replacement fitlers and at the prices above I can't afford that. |

I've bee struggling with this myself. What my research suggests is the Katadyn combi at $160 is pretty good. It has the .2 Micron silver impregnated ceramic filter.
From my study .2 Micron is the key to being real clean. The silver prevents bacteria growth. My second choice would be the Vario at $90. For my expected purposes either should work. EDIT: There's a great post below by Protus. The Katadyn Mini is pretty much as good as the combi, but cheaper, $100. ... |

Yep. Only costs around 25 bucks, is easy to adapt to small or large containers, works with zero water pressure...

I'm looking at the Hiker Pro right now. It really bothers me to still be relying on pills and bleach. I have been using mine for years backpacking. Works like a charm. Everyone says great things. I stumbled across the mini just now and now I'm indecisive again. Lighter and 2000 gallons instead of just 200, with no real price difference, hmmm... |

This is the best bang for the buck! |

This is the best bang for the buck! In Antigua, Guatamala, I saw that exact set up at a place set up by an American church. They gave some education to the people ther as well as job training. |

for a fixed position, like your house, or camp, these are awesome, and very cheap. they are supposed to work great. i have one of these and plan to get a couple more for a home filtering system to use in the kitchen. i also have added camelbak inline filters, and a kaidlyn pocket filter. |
