Don't know if this is the place for this thread but none of the other forums seemed any better.
What I'm looking for is a water proof shell that is tough as nails but won't cost me an arm and a leg. Inexpensive but not cheep. I don't want or need the jacket to have any isulation to keep me warm, I have plenty of things to layer under it, I just want it to keep me dry. I work with horses, move hay, do construction, spend time in the woods, so I want it to be able to take a beating. I've looked at stuff by Cabelas, Carhartt, Duluth Trading Co, and others but just don't know where to spend my money. Any info on a specific jacket or what to lok for in one would be great. And info on pant shells would be cool too. |

surplus gortex shell US made, or foreign, doesnt really matter, they will all be tough and waterproof If camo is OK, check out the German surplus rain parkas in flecktarn. They are made with the German equivalent of Gore Tex, and you can also get matching bibs for really foul weather. I have a set. The jacket cost me $25 and the bibs were $15. I bought them at I. Goldberg's surplus store in Philly, but you can find them online as well. |
| I have a Duluth Fire hose jacket...and it is the toughest best jacket I have ever owned or seen. It makes Carhart's look and feel wimpy. I treated it with a whole can of dry wax [I don't remember the brand, but it comes in a tub like mink oil and I got it from a camping store..] when I first got it and I think I mught be able to swim in it and stay dry.... |
| I love Arc'Teryx and have one jacket, you can't go wrong with them. But my favorite is a 5.11 3 in 1. I wore the shell in San Francisco for a Communications Class. It rained everyday for five days. I stayed bone dry. Great hood that keeps you protected and ample storage. |

Arc'Teryx when out boondocking on snowmobiles. All mine are made in Canada , the new ones that I have been seeing are chinese as of last year. I'm not sure of the diff. but I'm glad I have several of the older ones.
I also have some North Face , Marrmot. As said they are not cheap , I pick up my winter stuff at Travelcountry.com which is here in Fl. but they have good sales all the time on the site. |

The durability is something that I worry about on some of the shells I've seen. Was just at REI looking at shells and maybe the thing is pretty tough but it felt like it would tear in a heart beat and for $150 I wasn't going to take the chance. I have two shells. The one I wear in the winter is an old Moonstone GoreTex Alpinist jacket. All black and over 6 years old. Still keeping me dry.
The one I wear in the spring, summer, and fall is the Sierra Designs Hurricane Jacket. It is similar to the Marmot Precip. Excellent jacket and extremely lightweight. |
