Took my family to Jackson/Grand Teton/Yellowstone last week, had a blast...
Drive in was nice... 
Caught the Beehive Geyser which was cool... 
Grand Chromatic was pretty... 
Lower Falls was also cool... 
And did some hikes at the base of the Tetons with my kids and wife... 
We will be going back next year, i need to get a canoe to take out on Jackson Lake. Edit - taking my 8 year old son backpacking next weekend, need to decide where but somewhere in the Uintas. I've worn out my AMEX at REI, need to stop by this weekend and exchange the garmin gps I just bought for a 66i. |
My son and I finished a trip to North Erickson Lake today, left from smith and morehouse which is apparently the harder option. Not sure on exact mileage, my GPS said about 10 miles while my brothers phone that was on and apparently tracking said 15 miles. First half of the walk was mildly steep, last half was really steep and rocky. Had to make 6 river crossings. My son kicked butt! He got to play in the snow on July 6th.

Got back yesterday from a trip to the Great Sand Dunes. As always it's an amazing place. Medano was flowing good and strong.

Not an RV. This is real camping.
Snowtrekker Basecamp 8 x 10 Got it with the optional screen door, screen window and stove jack cover to use it for 4 season camping and not just winter. Ordered it about a month ago. These tents are made to order just the way you want them. It arrived on Tuesday but didn't have time to set it up till today. Luck and I took it and the canoe to the pond this afternoon. Took about a half hour to unbox it, read the instructions, ( I know, not a manly thing to do) and set it up. It is between the pond and the creek, one of the better trout streams in Indiana. Will be my home for a couple nights. Now for the difficult decisions..... do I fish for trout in the creek or for bass and bluegill in the pond? Luck enjoyed helping me set it up, swimming in the pond and riding in the canoe. Why would anyone sleep in a house when there is a beautiful pond and creek only 1/2 mile away? The window cover is rolled up. It fastens down with velcro around the edges. A fly is optional but not really necessary. These tents are made for winter but with the window, door screen and stove jack cover are nice for the rest of the year. They are the ultimate tent for winter use. Very comfortable to live in. The manufacturer is a good friend. I have wanted one for quite a while. They are not cheap but good tents seldom are.
The Basecamp 8 x 10 is not the smallest and lightest model. It is very roomy for 2 people on cots and can handle 3 on cots with a stove in winter. Sleeping on the floor you could squeeze 4 in if you had to . Summer use without the stove 3 or 4 can easily fit in. Weight is 21.5 lbs. Too heavy for backpacking but can be split up with the tent and a stove total weight is about 30 lbs. Not bad for 2 or 3 people with snowshoes or skis pulling toboggans or for several sled dog teams. I plan to do several trips to the UP and northern Wisconsin this winter. Hoping to also go to the Boundary Waters with some friends on a sled dog trip. For that trip we will be camping close to the edge of the wilderness and doing mostly day trips from the base camp. The 8 x 10 tent starts with a base price of $1315. We pull our camper out to the family farm in October and leave it there until Christmas break. Plenty of deer hunting and I usually Bush hog some trails for the kids to ride the quads in. The kids love going out there with me and this year my 12 year old daughter is going to try and get her first deer. Dan |
Gave a new tent a whirl last night in the backyard. My son and I camped out, temps dropped to around freezing. My kid had fun, will be a good tent for next summer's trips. Bought the little led strip for $25, it just plugs into any usb battery bank. Fun little gadget.

Tarps, tents, solo tents and bivi sacks ...
Burro Flats setup on the 25+ mile approach into Gannett. JSB2k10 and I were hiking into Gannett to meet up with RTUtah and a couple of his friends who were to hike in a couple days after us. Together, were all going to climb Gannett... 
On day 2 of the approach into Gannett, JSB had decided to turn back, because by all objective measures, the approach was a tough one, and I totally understand - I was so ready to quit, myself. So, by day 3, it was just me camped at the base of Gannett. RTUtah and his friends would arrive late the following day. 
And here's RTUtah and I lounging on a rest day at the Lower Saddle of Grand Teton about 5 days later … 
After RTUtah headed home, JSB and I headed back into the Winds. JSB set out on some circuit hikes in the southern Winds while I spurred off for a week to do some climbing. This was one of my bivis while I was doing some time lapse photography giving my hands a break from climbing … 
And in RMNP, this was my bivi for my failed attempt to climb Chasm View wall and the Diamond. This tight spot would best be described as "cozy", but it did offer outstanding wind protection....

It has been a while since I posted in this thread. Much of my camping is in the winter. I spent much of the winter in the UP with my sled dog team. Some staying with friends, Some in the Snowtrekker hot tent, some in a bivy sack on top of the sled. The pictures in this post are spring fever quarantine camping. Camped between my pond and the trout stream that goes through my farm. 1/4 mile from the nearest house. 3/8 mile from my house. Was nice to get out the last few nights. Since tomorrow the quarantine here in Indiana is being relaxed a little I have invited some friends to come camp. Gatherings of up to25 people will now be permitted. quote from a group of sled dog friends. I'm lucky to have over 300 acres to roam on. 1 mile East to West. 1/2 mile North to south. 2 woods, one 30 acres one 6 acres. Pond, trout stream. Can fish for trout, bluegill and bass without leaving my property. Hunt mushrooms, deer sheds. I can canoe or kayak and even use the 185 ft zip line if I want to. As we are opening up more here in Indiana I am thinking about inviting some friends over for small campouts. We have enough room that we can keep the camps well separated. Can sit around fires and stay over 6 feet apart. May4 Key to map, My camp yellow. Fire rings brown, Other campsites, red. Far west site is walk in unless it is very dry. Porta pottie, blue. 185 ft zip line to the island, green. Bridge to island, purple. Squeezing more than the 8 camps in would get us a little close till things get more relaxed. It is too warm for running the sled dogs so I didn't put that on the activity list. You could walk with them and do some ground training. With one or two to each site we would be well within the Indiana guidelines that come on May 4. Attached File |

Mt Washington, NH, late January. It was about 2ºF and 30mph winds where I was camped. I think the winds were about 90 mph up on the ridge. In the video, you can see the snow blowing from left to right in the moonlight. Right in the middle of the photo, you can see the fuzzy outline of the Andromeda galaxy. After 2 weeks of camping out up there, I scored an apartment. Felt like cheating, really. No, it was cheating. Totally.

Took my son out for an overnight backpacking trip. It went ok, my son had a rough time. I didn't do a great job navigating and we had to back-track a few times. He got worn out and had a melt down on the trail. We called it early and stopped by a lake on our way, turned out fine. I'm getting fat and out of shape, I need to make a point of scouting out some easy overnight trips with a day hike on my own a week or two before so we dont have the navigation issies. It would make a good excuse to get some extra exercise in. I also just need to get him out more. Anyway, the lake was nice. Was hoping to catch a bit of the Neowise comet but it turned out to be a bit cloudy. The pine beetles have killed at least half of the pines in this area.

Hiked up to Lake Blanch with my brother today, probably about 8 miles round trip after walking around all 3 lakes. Sundial is the peak in the background, when I was in college a friend and I hiked to the top on a long summer day hike. That would probably kill me now.

I haven't been camping in 4 years. I decided to camp overnight on the way to a race a few weeks ago to save money on a hotel and it just rejuvenated my desire to get back out.
