Anyone using Winlink..?
One of the first goals I have once I get my General is to get Winlink working. From a preparedness standpoint I can't see where it gets much better than to have the ability to communicate with non hams, using HF bands. |

I use winlink on VHF as part of local RACES/AUXCOMM/VDEM (Virginia Dept of Emergency Mgmt) communications.
There is some encouragement of winlink on HF. As a note from the field. The Kantronics KPC3+ is universally used and hated. Expect by those that don't know what to do with all their money, they buy Pactor. The problem I have seen with the KPC3+ is that it has more brains then needed. It will fall out of KISS mode. Making RMS Express look locked up. And you have to be careful when plugging in the barrel type power connector to avoid bricking it. If you don't intend to use the mailbox/store & forward capabilities of more complex systems I suggest avoiding them. In our county I am pushing for building out several low cost winlink VHF/UHF capable go-boxes. Using a TNC-X from coastal chipworks. We actually have an annual need for these in support of our local polling places. With winlink gateways accessible in the three counties surrounding us HF just isn't my priority so I can't help you with HF specific issues. |

This has been discussed in the arfham forum a few times in recent history.
See this thread and also this other thread. |

I am using it with my 857D and Signalink and Winmor. Find out what gateways you can connect to on low power and save them. You will find a few that are reliable given your location/antenna/setup. |
