| I installed a Workman HP201s SWR/Power meter in my truck CB. After hooking everything up (coax and 12v) I could not get the meter to work. The backlight comes on but the needle does not move when the mic is keyed (set on 5w range). Now I'm wondering if it's the meter or if my CB is not transmitting. The CB was bought new in the 90's and has not been installed since then. I took it out of the attic the other day and put it in the truck (as something to do). I just finished installing the antenna and coax today. I tried to get a radio check but no one responded. Is there any way to tell if my CB isn't transmitting or if the meter is bad? Even when I set the meter to SWR and keyed the mic I got nothing. And according to the meter instructions it's factory set at 27MHz. TIA. |

Mine worked fine but when I was investigating meters to buy, I read several anecdotes about people getting them with cold solder joints in the meter that caused similar behavior. Have you taken a peek inside? I took the top off when I was looking into mounting options but I didn't pay any attention to the guts. What should I be looking for? Thanks for the help. |

Solder joints should be bright and smooth. Dull, cloudy, uneven, generally ugly solder joints are bad and can yield sketchy electrical connections. After sitting that long, depending on what kind of solder was used they may look ugly but be fine. Some of the reports I read said that the bad joint was obvious and others just said they heated up all the connections and made them right. I'd probably wait to hear from someone smarter before tackling that route unless there are only a couple joints or you see an obviously bad one.

What model CB? Is the CB in the PA mode? Does the meter/display move when the radio is keyed? The CB is a Yosan JC-2204. It does have a PA mode but it's not engaged. When keyed the display shows full bars. I can hear conversations on the radio, just no responses to my calls. I tried several radio checks and got no responses, but there was a lot of traffic and my set up is stock (5w). |
