I recall there were some china/hk imprted backpack radios. They were roughly the size of a mobile unit, had batteries, 5 or 7 watts output, antenna conenctor and the battery pack that separated from them.

Anyone got any model #s? Not looking for more power then handheld necesarily as much as better antenna options.

HF or VHF/UHF?

you can attach a larger/bigger/better antenna to any modern HT, via the SMA or BNC antenna connector on top.

VHF/UHF

Yes attaching diff antennas is another route I'm looking at, and started a thread about. Won't solve battery life issues though. I have spare rechargeables I can swap but not quite the same thing.

Tokyo Hi-Power used to offer talkies that covered a single HF ham band.

SGC offered a detachable battery pack for the 2020, before the radio was discontinued. It was a great concept, with so-so execution.

EDIT: Just noticed that you're looking for VHF/UHF radios - sorry.

FT-817 will do HF plus VHF/UHF. Batteries included.

ft-897 will do the same, but with more power. add about $350 or so to the price of the 897 for batteries and charger

AGM batteries will give you more power, for less money.

since you only want VHF/UHF what about the Yaesu FTM-10R and build a backpack with a battery and small solar panel?

That would work also.     I recomended a radio with hf because that's what pushed me to upgrade.  More incentive when you get jealous of the guys talking around the world when you are happy to hit a repeater 75 miles away.

why do you sat only 15 miles? its a 50w 2m and 40 on 70c. that with a good antenna he should easily get 50 miles and if he is on a mtn he would get even farther.

Hrm, I'll hold off on upgrades for now. Have some PX-777s, a dualbander, 2 FT-8800r and some other misc stuff just to play with.

My next big step is packet radio.

Studied online, tech is super easy. Couldn't just study online for general (well, studied but results fell short), got a book. Will take it next HAM fest in PA/NJ area I can make it out too.

Your guide was really awesome. Wish I had it when I studied for it the 1st time in CAP.

Thats starting to look more like a dedicated backpack, not sure I want to go all out. I've worked on parts of future warrior system, and some wearable computing stuff and I don't think I want to turn my hiking gear into the the ghetto version of early prototypes or add that much extra weight. I am adding SGL batteries, solar panel, solar charger etc etc setup to my car trunk. It'll support one of the FT-8800r and I can control it from my handheld.

Have a scaled down version of th setup in the office with smaller battery and no solar.

Trying to use a mobile radio as a military-esque backpack radio for VHF/UHF is ridiculous to achieve your stated goals (low TX power/big battery/external antenna).

Get a good HT with a large battery, and some spare batteries.  HTs have significantly less power consumption than mobile radios, so your bigger battery would be just getting you back to parity with an HT.

Connection to larger/higher performance antennas is no problem with almost any HT.

If you're set on some kind of backpack radio I'd WECSOG an HT into a project box with connectors jumpered from the HT to the outside via waterproofed connectors and one of those large lithium ion laptop-extender batteries.

Thanks for heads up but already have plans for this weekend. Any tests the following weekend in PA/NJ?
TCNJ isn't super close but more then doable.
