| I need help finding containers for our rice, flour, sugar, beans etc............ |
My buddy runs a pizza shop; he has been giving me little 2 gal buckets and the big plastic jars from banana peppers![]() I use those for pasta, rice and baking mix; straight up, in the bucket. Also, any Lowes or Home depot will sell 5 gal buckets and lids for $2.xx/bucket and maybe $1.xx/lid; you can always throw food in there, then repackage it in mylar w/ 02 absorbers later for a quick and dirty food storage. Lately I have taken to 1 gallon paint cans.
Get new ones- you can buy ones with no lining at most hardware stores and then use a food grade bag inside, or you can order them with food grade linings. Good, positive seal, you can add clips to seal it even better, and I like the idea of 1 gallon sized containers so spoilage after opening is not as big a threat. |

Good luck. Merlin |

A friend of mine pointed out you could print up some bogus labels that said they were full of paint and most looters would pass them right by as well..... |

I have various metal tin cans, some were marked down popcorn cans bought after the holidays. I threw out the popcorn because it was nasty. Some are just decorative tins found here and there, also often found on markdown after holidays. I use canning jars to break things down to smaller amounts I use in the kitchen for some stuff. I am about to start filling a 55 gallon metal drum I have that is in good shape on the inside and just needs the outside touched up a little. I plan to use 1 gallon or so bags so I can just open small amounts now and then. I like glass and metal. I know a lot of folks have no issues with plastic and I may use some plastic buckets and mylar as well, but overall my favorites are glass or metal with quality lids because they keep bugs and mice out. I may also skip plastic buckets and use metal galvanized garbage cans and use some silicone caulk or something to make a gasket for the lid. Since the bags are smaller I can always use other smaller containers to move stuff but when it comes to me filling and forgetting something I really like glass or metal. |
