In the late spring I got 12 Rhode Island Red chickens.  I have been getting eggs for a few weeks now.  I have one rooster and I really like having him around, but I got my first egg with a blood spot today.  How long does it take to develop a blood spot in the coop?  12 hrs?  Once they are refrigerated can they still develop?  Aside from rooster dinner or keeping him away from the hens, is there any other way to reduce the chance of blood spots in the eggs?

I have fertlized eggs and i havent seen or noticed any blood spots, but have hatched eggs from my group so i know there fertil..  How long was the egg sitting .  i have had eggs in the fridge for up to say 2-3 weeks and no differance in apperance.  We Had RIR last year and they were good layes and the Roo was a breeding Machine.  When we were going to hatch a batch i would just keep them in the garage until i had enough for the incubator.  As far as the spot if its weird to ya i would just pick it out of the egg and proceed as normal.

The occasional blood spot does not really bug me but I am the family egg hook up now so ....   I have collected about 60 eggs so far and it was one of the smaller first eggs (two or three weeks old now).  It may have set in the coop for a day or two until I found it.  The hens thought they were the Easter Bunny when they first started laying eggs (they hid them all over the place).

I have 14 hens and 2 roosters.  I have found that  if the eggs are fertilized, they Will have this spot in various size in all the yokes.  It is noticeably in most of the eggs.
