Hi
I'm interested in finding a handheld scanner that will let me receive police/emergency transmissions. I am clueless about scanners. Can anyone recommend some models in the $150-200 range? I have a Yaesu VX7 that I would love to use as a police scanner but unless there is some mod, It won't receive emergency frequencies. Is there a mod that would let me use my VX7 as a scanner? |

Good Day, much depends upon where you are. If in a big city, your PD may be using the latest & greatest trunk, encrypted, whizzbang, system that would require a very sophisticated scanner. If you are like me, in a small town, a simple scanner may do the job. So, more info is needed on your location etc. 73, Rob |

Even then, some of it has been encrypted, which, to my knowledge, you cannot monitor unless you own some very advanced equipment or have a compatible system and have the comsec key. There is also a learning curve to some of the more advanced scanners, and you may end up paying for a subscription to sites like that linked below to keep up with local systems or update your scan profiles as you travel. Radio Reference is a good starting point to find systems active in your area. |

what part of GA?
what exactly do you want to listen to this will answer that for you - and show you what else is around to listen to then you can look through and find a radio. I'm interested to know why your VX7 will get police but not get emergency (I assume you mean fire/ems) - I'd figure police would go digital or trunked first (the probable reasons why you can't get them on your VX7) |
