Do you recommend a 1 or 2 piece scope base on a bolt gun and why,

And is it necessary to bed 2 piece bases why or why not?

I use Seekins rings on bolt guns. Good rings are absolutely fine. They don't need to be bedded.

Thanks,  but rings need to be mounted on a base right?  I was asking about bases. Or do some rings mount right to the receiver?

I prefer a one piece base with a one piece mount but it is strictly preference.  Check out the SPUHR scope mounts.

Any particular reason you like a 1 piece over 2?

I prefer 1 piece.

If you have a flat top, mount directly to receiver.

On my Sako I have  bedded my Near base with Devcon 10110 and used Seekings rings on top.  I prefer one piece, one less piece to deal with.

Oops.  Sorry.  I prefer a one piece rail mount.  Those can be bedded with some marine tex.

Better chance of alignment.  With a one piece base and one piece mount you only have two variables, the base and the mount.  With a two piece you have four variables, the two scope piece mounts and the two independent rings.  I like to remove as many variables as possible when alignment is concerned, especially with factory rifles.  The only time I would be confident with a two piece would be a rifle by tac ops.

Another vote for the 1 piece base. You have a much greater amount of adjustability with the 1 piece vs. the 2 piece. I recommend bedding the bases, regardless of 1 or 2 piece. The more contact that you have in place, the less chance you have of things changing as time and use go on. Always, always, always, take out as many of the PITA variables as possible. Just my $0.02 worth...
