Has anyone done a build with a Bighorn? If so, what do you think?
I bought a Ruger Precision Rifle to see if I would like a bolt gun and that rifle sold me! I've decided to upgrade a bit and do a build using a Bighorn TL2 SA in 308. The action looks as solid as others, uses Savage short shank barrels and offers the ability to do a bolt face change to another caliber. I was going to have Patriot Valley Arms do the build in 308, and order a second barrel in 223 at the same time. I'm not doing anything fancy, just chasing smaller holes on paper. TIA. LT2 SA |

I'm kind of partial to the Big Horn actions myself. I've had a chance to get behind a few at the shop, and one will be my next build, after I settle a few things that are in line first. A TL2, Stewart barrel, and an Orias chassis will claim a chunk of my extraneous income.

It is. There may be issues with the bolt release and ejection port though. Quoted:

Let me recheck, I was going off a note on the JAE site. I can call Lisa and ask if they've tested that action. |

i have two bighorns that i've used in PRS type competition since before the PRS. one is one of the first and the other was made year before last. i'm on the eight barrel on one, and second barrel on the other. there is a lot to like about them, but there i a good bit to not like as well. all things considered, i would not buy another bighorn until they get the ejection problems sorted out.
if i were buying right now, i would go with defiance. a year from now, i'd probably go with impact's new action or GAP's new action |

that's kind of a bold statement, since there are so few mausingfields out there and even fewer have really done anything beyond getting shot off a bench a few times for an internet bragging group. has anyone ever won any kind of major match with one? i've never even seen one at a PRS match.
as far as custom actions are concerned, mausingfield is a new, niche player and it will be years (if they're lucky) before considering them the equal of names like defiance and surgeon |

Considering its been out about a year and these guys only use proven gear, its a statement. Some of the best minds in the rifle building world have come out and said this really is the next great thing. No other custom action out there really compares. Surgeon and defiance really offer nothing the other dozen custom actions offer. Take any custom rem 700 action and spin up a barrel by a quality smith and the will do the same thing. Mausingfield will be smoother, more reliable and give the shooter more options. |

interesting. i had no idea. care to list a few matches that were won? also what do you mean by options? I'm guessing the cocking option. Whether the emphasis is on the extraction or during chambering. That's the only option that I'm aware of, and I'm not sure if that's worth 300$+ over a defiance or surgeon. They do have the bolt change out feature and toroidal lugs. Defiance makes a great action. There may be a reason that several of the top custom shops are using them. They may not have defiance on the side, but that's who made them. Corrected: forgot about the bolt head interchangeability and toroidal lugs. |

i know those, just thought you were saying they also made the mausingfield and put arc's name on it. if that's not what you're saying, i'm afraid i've missed your point.
my point was, as an example, when i ordered my defiance action, i selected from their available options: which side the bolt was on (left) which side the ejection port was on (right) the geometry of the feed and ejection ports, the type of bolt handle, the type of extractor, etc. etc etc is the mausingfield available in a left bolt right port option with an m16 extractor? just an example... i'm not dogging the mausingfield, there just seems to be a lot of unsupported hype fwiw, the 'what the pros use' was updated a mere 8 days ago and there are no mausingfields in the top 100 shooters http://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/11/05/custom-rifle-actions/ |

Again, I appreciate the replies and opinions. I've read a lot about all the actions mentioned, but have no real experience with bolt guns other than my 1903A4. The TL2 was intriguing with it's ability to do a barrel change so easily, but I got a smoking deal on the MF barreled action from Chad at LongRiflesInc. A customer got cold feet on a M24 26" build that was cerakoted and ready to ship. I had them cut it back to 20" and thread the barrel, which they did the next morning at no charge, and it was out the door to my FFL mere hours after we closed the deal.
My second choice most likely would have been a Deviant, but I basically got this MF at a better price so I couldn't pass it up. It's been getting good reviews and heck, what do I know, I'm new to all this. If I don't like it, it will go to the EE!

What problems were you/are you having? I have 2 of the TL2 actions and haven't had any problems yet. What do I look for? Quoted:

yeah, between that and the bolt replacement, i'm done. What problems were you/are you having? I have 2 of the TL2 actions and haven't had any problems yet. What do I look for? Don't look for anything. AJ sent out a bolt replacement because he improved on the original design, not to repair a malfunction. |

it won't eject when you run it fast. it may for some calibers, but it won't for mine, and 2 other match shooters I know have identical problem. it will flip the case around backwards and leave it in the action, so when you close the bolt, it will try to stick it in the chamber backwards.
my new one and old one have same problem. also, AJ replaced the old bolt because it was a 2 piece design and he felt something else would be safer. however, the new bolt wasn't the same as the old one (despite the fact that i kept my bolt head), and it runs like crap so my old gun (after 13k rounds and 8 barrels) is unusable. |
If I don't like it, it will go to the EE!
