I am interested in getting into PRS shooting.  I would like to stay under $1000 on my initial investment.  A local gun shop has a Savage 10 FCR-SR for $629.  I am leaning toward getting this and putting either the fixed 10x Bushnell or the fixed 16x SWFA as a starter scope.  Which of these do you think I would be most happy with?  I’m worried the 16x might be too much for closer targets.

The goal of this rifle is to cut my teeth on precision shooting and have it be something I can eventually build up to a better rifle or in a couple years get something new all together (RPR 6.5 CM?) and keep this around as a loaner/backup.  I don’t reload yet but I will get started once I get more comfortable and feel I will benefit from it more.

Any input on if I’m on the right path or should I go a different route?  I’m open to suggestions.

don't know anything about the bushnell but I'd defnitly go 12x with the SS mil/mil over the 16x. if you can spring for another $100 I'd look at the 6-24 Athlon argos btr. I stepped up to this from a SS 12x and it was a huge improvement. I hear the talos btr 4-14 is also a great buy and in the same price range as the SS scopes. shop around on the rifle and don't discount buying online. as much as I'd like to support the local gun shops, they just can't compete. by the time you tack on tax you end up spending a lot more than just buying online and transferring it through you local FFL.

save your brass as you will likely start reloading if you plan to stay in it. I looked at PRS briefly but quickly discovered it's out of my league right now. lol those guys are serious!

I have a savage fcp-sr10 with a trijicon 2.5x10x56 scope on it . the rifle is an excellent shooter . I also own a bushnell elite 10x that is getting replaced with a super sniper 10x with moa reticle and turrets .
the bushnell is a decent scope but it dont have any parallax adjustment . you just missed swfa blackfriday sale they had the ss scopes marked down 40.00 plus you get a set of rings and level free . I just got the ss 10x yesterday and havent had a chance to mount it up yet but my initial thoughts are this thing is built like a tank . a range trip will tell the truth.
The savage will shoot right out of the box I like the accutrigger and the stock is usable . all you need to do is add a decent scope and you can learn alot before deciding if or what you want to modify or change. Mine likes a steady diet of 168 grain hornady amax.

you'll like the SS and for that price it was a steal! I've owned two a 10x mildot about 10 years ago and a 12x Mrad mil/mil

funny I run 168 amax's as well. it's been my go to bullet in the 3 .308's I've ran. going to try the 175 nosler rdf's when they show up. 155 tmk' failed to excell beyond the lowly 168 amax

I was also looking at the Athlon optics but I had never heard of them before so I was unsure if they were decent or not.

so far they seem to be the best bang for the buck. the argos btr is in direct competition with the vortex viper pst but at half the cost. there's a large thread on them on snipershide in the optic's section.

i've only taken mine out once (6-24x50 argos btr) but I can say aside from the not as crisp turrets it's a very noticeable improvement. and I really like the side paralax vs rear of the SS

I'll second the Athlon recommendation. I love my tacos BTR (4-14x) for the money and would recommend it as a great scope to learn on

Savage can be frustrating in PRS and PRS style shooting.  The ejection and extraction issues they have tend to show up more when the bolt is being run fast.

If you just want to shoot prone or off a bench to learn it will work fine.

Do you have any links to threads about the extraction issues?  I haven't seen any but I haven't done any deep digging for them either.  Not doubting you but I'd like to read up on it.  Most of the reviews I have read were pretty positive.

You'd have to do some research, there are literally zero savage actions used in the highest tiers of competitions.  Any brand including high end customs can haver issues, but Savages tend to have the most issues when being run hard.  I've seen them be very accurate, but know first hand of many people who have struggled with them under match conditions.  many people who review things aren't running them through their paces at high tempo matches.
