I have a VX-1 4-12x40 with a warne steel picatinny rail on my savage 30/06. I put the rail on to get proper eye relief. I cleaned the oil off everything, used low strength locktite, and used a scope torque tool to tighten. Everything seemed pretty solid. I got good groups and nothing moved after a couple boxes. While hunting I took a hard fall and the rifle must have hit harder than I thought because now I cannot get the scope zeroed left to right without bottoming out the adjustment knob. I had pencil lines on the scope where the rings are and nothing seems to have moved. Is it possible I damaged the scope? and if so what scope can I get that can take a hard hit? Thanks |

Anything is possible but if your windage was off after the hard fall your rifle took.
Chances are if you were able to adjust the windage to zero again and it's holding your zero the scope could be fine. What I would do is remove the scope and set it back to it's mechanical zero. Then remount it again . It could be you didn't have the rings pushed forward tight on the rail and they were bumped back during the fall. I would go as far as also removing and remounting the rail just to be able to confirm everything is right. This is the stuff I would do before looking for another scope. |

I was thinking about removing everything and reinstalling. If it will zero after I set it back to the middle the scope should be okay and something else must have moved right? Yes if it holds your zero and the scope tracks fine then it should be no issue. It could be like I said that the rings were pushed forward or back on the rail during the fall. Just make sure when you remount everything you push the rings forward against the picatinny rail tight before you torque them down. If this doesn't work then I would say something was damaged in the scope internally and I would be contacting Leupold to see where to go from here. |

I did push them forward on the original install but they are weaver rings that I think came with the factory scope on the savage. Not sure of the quality of the rings. I had been planning to replace them with steel picatinny rings but didn't have time prior to hunting season. |
| My guess is that the weak link in your setup is those Weaver rings. I think it likely that one of them bent slightly. This would be a good opportunity to upgrade. FWIW, I've never been a fan of using Picatinny type base on a hunting rifle. Most of my bolt guns run Talley rings and bases. Those bases have shounders front and rear and the rings have shoulders on each side, locking the ring and base together as you tighten it up. They are rock solid, super sturdy, and as an added benefit, really dress up the rifle. I'm sure you can find good hunting ring/base combos that will be the right height for your stock. You can install as either fixed or QD. |

I think the rings were the problem also but they don't look bent. Leupold told me if it won't zero again to send it back. I ended up moving the rings to a 30/30 that I was carrying in my other hand when I fell. The scope on that one got really messed up. It rattles when I shake it so I put the original savage scope and rings on it. Now I need to get a new set of rings to test the vx-1 out. |

Please advise me why it is preferred to have the rings pushed forward on the rail all the way before tightening the cross bolts. I pushed mine all the way back before tightening, thinking recoil shock pushes backward. I am using a Talley aluminum rail and Burris xtreme tactical med 30mm rings to mount my S&B 3-12x50 Classic.
on my Win mod 70 270win. Thank You! |

That's what I thought originally myself but if you think about it the rifle is moving back and if the scope was not tight which direction would it move on the rail? It would make contact towards the front so by moving it forward it locks it against the rail and prevents any movement. Sorry for the convoluted explanation |
| Thanks, makes sense, I will just leave mine all the way back as long as it is tight it will be fine? But These cross bolt tightening nuts are 1/2inch and I don't want to over tighten with my ratchet. These Burris Extreme tactical aluminum med 30mm rings should only be torque tightened by how much? Also the torx screws on top of the ring by how much? It's just got to be done right! |

Repeated recoil might allow it to move if you leave it towards the back. I bought a torque tool from the company I bought the rail from. Here's some info from their site on the settings but I would go to the manufacturer's website for the rings you have http://warnescopemounts.com/help-faqs/ |
