So I'm an AR and pistol guy all day long and shoot about once a week. Recently I gained some access to a 300 + yd range and would like to get myself a long range setup. I'm sure this has been asked before but can you guys recommend a setup for me. I'm not even sure what caliber I would want, action, optic, etc. My budget for the rifle is anywhere from 2-3000 bucks and about 2,000 for an optic. I live in a state where suppressors aren't legal so that's not even an option. I def want a bolt action rifle, that's a must for me. I'm really just looking for a little direction and also don't hesitate to throw some pics out there of your own setups, lol they always help and i like looking at shit. Thanks, any questions for me just fire away.

you're gonna get a MILLION opinions, all subjective.   I am sorta in your shoes, but just a little further ahead of you.

2-3K will get you several good rifles.  300 yards isn't that far so you have a huge choice. some good ones:

Tikka CTR
Savage Stealth 6.5
Savage 10 Predator
Ruger Precision
Bergara B-14 HMR

Caliber, there's really 2 choices right now,  .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.  There are dozens of other choices of course, but for a beginner,  either of those will get you a really long ways. I'd also maybe recommend .243.

Why? Well known ballistics, easy to get factory ammo.  If you reload 6.5 Creedmoor might be better. 6.5 is HOT right now but .308 has a ton of options, easy to get ammo, the works.  I'm a .260 shooter but factory ammo is impossible. I reload everything.

Scope?  a boatload of options

Vortex Razor Gen II
Nightforce
Kahles
Athlon Cronus

tons of options. I HIGHLY recommend a holdover or "christmas tree" reticle.  It's personal style but they are easier to shoot. You'll have to decide MOA or MIL.

One of the best things you can do is watch the Sniper 101 series on Youtube by TibborasaurusRex.  There's soooo much info in that series that will get you started.

Sniper 101 Series

if you said to me "CBR, go get me a Precision set up that will get me to 300 yards, go"  I'd get one of the following:

Bergara B-14 HMR, topped with a Vortex Razor GenII  4.5x27x56 in LaRue rings, a bipod and a bunch of ammo.

second choice would probably be

Savage Stealth 6.5 Creedmoor with either same scope, or possibly the Sig Tango6 5x30x56 with the leveling reticle. I have never shot this, but handled one at sigday and fell in love. seems nice.

I own a Tikka CTR in .260, they also make one in 6.5 Creedmoor, and now also a Tikka in a chassis. I think TSX.

that's what I'd buy right this moment. Subject to change on a whim

2-3k on a rifle. I'd find a custom company that fit the price range and do that.

What does 300+ mean 300-600yds or 300-1000yds or 300-1800yds? That will make a difference.

I appreciate all the feedback and will def watch that series. It's nice to c some familiar names of manufacturers, I own a couple vortex razors but only 1-4. So as for caliber I've read a lot In regards to the creedmor cartridge so that may be it. I'll check into those rifles, homework time. I appreciate the direction that's really what I was looking for. Fucking love this forum, there is just so much info on almost any firearm your looking into.

O and sorry 300- 800 max. But I feel like I would like to go out to 1,000 because I do travel and can c myself going on trips just to shoot, I've done it before.

Used Accuracy International AE MKIII folder would be my choice.

Trying to find a LNIB Vortex Gen II Razor as well would work.  Also, a new Bushnell DMR IIi would be a good choice for ~$1500.

A Badger Unimount is a excellent choice too.

Snipershide is a good source for both.

For 1k yds and under you can pretty much take your pick from .223 and up of any common cartridges you can find match ammo for ( or components if you load).

If you go with the "weaker" cartridges like .223 or .308 make sure to get a rifle with a proper twist to stabilize the best bullets available. That would be a 6.5-7 twist for .223 and 10 twist for .308.

1) Figure out the cartridge you want to shoot

2) Find the bullet you want to use in that cartridge.

3) Find the rifle that has a proper twist rate to comfortably stabilize your bullet in the worst conditions you will shoot.

Caliber
6.5C

Rifle
Bergara B-14 HMR
Savage Asbury/LRP
Tikka
Ruger RPR

Optics
Steiner T5Xi  3-15
Vortex Razor
Vortex PST GEN II 3-15

Scope Mount
Sphur
Seekins

Bipod
Harris
Atlas

Ammo
Hornady 140 ELD-M
Hornady 147 ELD-M

Shooting Mat

Pelican Hard Case

Pick any of those and you will be more than qualified at your 300yard range and find yourself driving elsewhere to really strech the distance

Definitely go with the 6.5 Creedmoor round. The hype is well founded. You can shoot it for an extended session and not feel any recoil effects.
I got a Savage 12 LRP with the HS Precision stock and the price was way below your budget. Couldn't be happier. Third time out I was putting  20 rounds on steel at 600yards.
I'd seriously look at the Savage Stealth. It's supposed to be even better. Get a high power scope as well. 30 power minimum.

I don't see any reason he'd go with a scope like that for the application he described. 20-25x on the top end perhaps, but even that's not necessary to ping steel at 800-1000. I've had little trouble with 10-15x and good glass at those distances.
