I have a problem with a new setup that I hope ya'll can help me with.

I just put a Remington 700 into a new AB Arms Mod X chassis with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP scope that I mounted with a LaRue LT111 mount. I am new to precision rifles and am confused with the issues I am having and hope I didn't screw up by not understanding everything before I purchased the chassis, scope, and mount. The issue arose when I tried to bore sight with a Sightmark laser bore sight .308 cartridge at about 30 yards. The reticle was way low from the target and I had to use all of the elevation adjustment just to get within .5 mil of target. The Mod X chassis is suppose to have a built in 20MOA rail.

Do you see anything wrong with this setup or why I am having to use all my elevation just to get to the target. This will not allow any adjustment for longer ranges. Any ides?

I'm still a bit of newb with scopes but -

20 MOA ~ 7 mils. The scope has an advertised 19 mrad total adjustment, so from the center, that's 9.5 available. Accounting for factory tolerances, that may take all the elevation.

Oh, if the reticle is low, the rifle would hit high if the sight was centered on target, so you were adjusting the impact down and will have more elevation for longer ranges.

Thanks for the reply. So what you are saying is that 30-40 yrds might be my minimum limit I can adjust for with the 20 MOA rail but would have the upper end for longer ranges? I was wondering about what would be the minimum yardage distance. If that is the case what distance to bore sight to get on paper at 100 yrds?

I'm not sure about minimum.

Personally, I shoot at a 6 MOA black circle at 100 yards, so I rest the rifle, take the bolt out, align the target in the bore, then check the sight alignment.

Remove the boresighter, throw it in the garbage, bore sight through the bore by eye. Is the mount a mile high, why didn't you use a base and rings? EDIT: I see that chassis mounts the scope. Looks like you have a rail mounting the scope way high and on top of that you have a mount mounting the scope higher yet.

With the scope mounted 12 feet above the bore like that you are going to have to bore sight at a longer distance than 30yds. The line of bore and line of sight being farther apart makes for a sharper angle for them to cross.

None of what you say sounds right though, you shouldn't be out of up elevation.

I would have used regular rings to mount the scope but I could not find any that were tall enough. I have to have 1.5" rings or mount for the Viper 6-24x50 objective to clear the rail on the AB Arms Mod X chassis. I will see if I can manually bore sight at 100 yrds. Thanks.

Yup toss the bore sighter. Go to the range and shoot a round at a large piece of paper at 25 yards. Use the reticle as a ruler to tell you how much you need to adjust the knobs to get the point of impact at 1" low from the point of aim. Then shoot one more to check. Go to 100 yards and you will be close.

That scope will mount just fine on a 20 MOA base.

I was able to get to the range today to sight in the new setup. The 100 yard zero wound up being to where I have 1.1 mils left in the down direction and about 19 mils in the up direction. This is with .308 Federal 168 gr SMK Gold Metal Match. I also had some Australian Outback 168 gr Sierra Gameking Soft Points that were about 1.5" high at 100 yrd over the Federal.

Thanks for the help guys!
