Doesn't really slow anything down too much. I wasn't all that used to the pistol grip type stock on my AICS coupled with a really light trigger (my mk13). I've sent a few unintended rounds down range on accident closing the bolt with a live round in the prone position. I've since made it a habbit to immediately flip the safety on while I'm closing the bolt when im not shooting rapid fire...which is a little harder to do with a magnum. |

I've been through AI's LE Armorers Course. Just in that class they teach you damn near everything you could want to know to keep that rifle running. Not to mention the backwards compatibility of the system in robbing parts/bolts from other and more importantly older rifles. With the newer class of rifles you don't even need the barrel change tool kit to do a barrel swap. I have never understood why they don't buy an AIAXMC Mag, and that one receiver will cover anything they could possibly want. Not to mention, you will not see any to this fumbling with the bolt that you do with some of the Remington's in the videos posted here. The bolt on an AI is like butter. Is the USMC not using AI mags in some of the rifles anyhow? Afghanistan Sniper Training - AW50 M24 XM2010 |

In your examples, did the rifle fire from light trigger/hard bolt closing or from the trigger being pressed? If I'm not mistaken, the Marine in that video had already closed the bolt before putting the safety on, which wouldn't prevent an AD from a light trigger/running the bolt like you just spent the week at RO. Not trying to be arguementative at all, just trying to wrap my head around it. I run my triggers on my AI's at the factory setting. I know how to properly adjust them, but I'm actually quite comfortable with their weight, which is ~ 3.5-4.5 lb if I remember correctly. I'd shot my AX338 out to +2000 yds and made hits on steel IDPA targets, so I don't personally feel the need to go real low. The Geisselle hi-speed DMR trigger is my benchmark in what I like. My AI's are close to that. I realize everyone is different, but I'm not sure I'd want a rifle I had to be delicate with closing the bolt with the safety off to avoid an AD. I know that is what you were issued and had no choice. I know it is the same for these Marines, and they have to fit their training to what is valid for them and their equipment. Just mainly curious if a year or two from now if I take a PR class will I have an instructor harping to run the safety after each and every shot; as if it was a fad or had actual reason. I appreciate your feedback very much. |

Doesn't the issue Mk13 have a two stage trigger? The Mk13 came into the Marines around the time I was getting out...and of course only to operators, so I've never handled one. I've only seen one, but it was an older mod and was with one of the Seal teams that visited out FOB. I wasn't sure what it was at the time. |

My Spuhr mount is 1.34", but I am using a 30MOA MARS and a 34mm S&B 5-25x56. Harris bipods. I'm using the 6-9" with swivel base and notched legs. In the Mod 5 and 6, they used stock Remington recoil lugs. You can use a beefier lug if it makes you sleep better at night. |

View Quote Well at least you know your rail is going to a good home. Now, I will build a mk13. Every rifle I've ever wanted to clone, I did. I just can't go down the mk13 rabbit hole at this point in my life. So...in the mean time, all I have to do is open up the holes on my action to 8-40, and I can rock this rail on my M24 until I commit to the build. Whenever I see a 24 with the MARS rail, it looks WAY to high. I mean, you already have to build the cheek up so you can get a good cheek weld, but can anybody tell me how much higher it ends up being? |

Mile High usually has the action and chassis. Euro Optic has the chassis. ETA: I believe there were some Mod5s with that action. if you look in the OP, there's a pic that looks like an Mod5 with a longer bolt handle found on the stiller action |

It has the good and bad of a 700 clone...which has a lot of bad. One thing...it ejects high. Big mag cases will hit your optic. Your smith can cut away part of the extractor...but it is an inexact science. If you are buying new and must have a 300 win mag (Why?), I would look hard at an AI for ease of barrel changes or a Mausingfield if you just want a rock solid rifle. The Mausingfield is an amazing action. It just requires a smith to barrel. |

The Mausingfield is an amazing action. It just requires a smith to barrel. So what's better? A Blueprinted 700 action or Stiller? Personally...based on speaking with folks that build them, the aftermarket actions (Stiller, Defiance, etc.) are superior overall. The 700 doesn't have great primary extraction and often has other issues like the action itself not being round/straight. An interesting look is to try and fit a 700 into a tube gun chassis. You have to true the outside of the action in order to get it perfectly round/straight. The smiths that do it often call 700s "banana actions" because they have so much bend to them. I have several 700s that have been worked over and are great. I wanted to take an old 700 and build on it for nostalgia...and I did. Looking back, it cost more and doesn't perform any better than a clone action. For the money, you can't beat a Stiller. For performance, you can beat any 700 clone. If you are going to use it hard, there are better options than the 700 type actions. YMMV |

Having said that, using it demonstrated why AI and similar made their rifles the way that they do. Any 700 clone is going to have some limitations. Its not bad...but things like being able to eject live rounds when cycled at normal speed...that would be nice to have. 700s were made for ease of manufacture and low cost, much like a Glock. They work and they perform...but you get what you pay for. Its like 300 win mag...it is great and it works...but there are possibly some better options. I love my win mags. I built 3 of them. They do great things. Having said that...they are too big to be small and too small to be big. I actually use my 308 and my 260 more. I just grab what I need to do what I want to do. Full disclosure though...I am thinking hard about a 300 Norma build. Its a lot of fun and they do work well. You will enjoy it...except for paying for ammo |

So what is a 700 clone exactly? An action built in place of a 700? Compatible with what would work with 700 actions? I'm new to the bolt game. I've always been an AR platform Guy. Through my years of service the only bolt gun I ever ran was an M24...and I ended building one. Since then, I really lost interest in all my semi-autos. The accuracy is just not comparable. This will also be my first venture outside of 223 and 308. What round would you say is better than the 300wm? I am a fan of the tac338, but I like to shoot a lot and don't think I can afford to reload 338. I'm a Combat Arms Instructor at work, and a RO and rifle instructor on my days off, so I spend quite a bit of my time on the range.

Copies of the M700 footprint with their own touch of machining and aesthetics. Kind of like a Ruger M77 is a copy of the Mauser action. Remington actions are good actions. Dont let people fool you saying they are bad. Remington mass produces firearms, and there's going there is going to be a few bad apples. The "custom" actions are made in a lower volume and have a higher quality control. Remington has there 40x actions which are hand picked out of a batch as the creme of the crop. Even still, a M700 action once properly trued is a great action. Custom actions are less work for gunsmith building a rifle. Anyone building a tube gun isn't going to use it for a utilitarian purpose. I've sold hundreds of Rem 700s. I can count on one hand how many I had to send back that skipped their QC. A few more for end uder failures such as not oiling the metal surfaces after a hot humid day and putting it in a gun case for 6 months to find out that their rifle has surface rust... Are custom actions better? Yeah...but it's all in the machinist/gunsmith and shooter to determine how great it can shoot...same goes for the M700 action. Most, if not all of the custom actions have tig welded bolt handles which are stronger than a stock Remington action. And several of the custom actions come with precision fit bolt lugs and sometimes scope bases. |

View Quote Take a peek at the various ballistic solvers/calculators. There are some decent ones that you can download as an app. Applied Balistics is solid. True it with your data and it can do great things. Personally...recoil sucks and barrel life matters. A 6.5 Creedmore will shoot to1K easily and ranges longer than that are hard to find. Plus, factory precision ammo is plentiful and relatively cheap. I love my MK 13...but it gets old with the recoil and forget about positional shooting in anything beyond barricades or rests. Heavy, loud, etc. My 260 gets the most use but factory ammo isn't as plentiful as 6.5 Creed. YMMV |

Thanks for all the feedback and info! I appreciate it. So if I used let's say a Stiller action, would my MARS rail have to be modified to fit that action?
