I've got a used Rem 700 SPS Tac in .308 in a fairly good condition.
With it came a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14 x 50 + M1 turrets + illumination.
The scope sits in QRW-rings on a two-piece base.
The rifle comes with the standart Hogue-stock.
I've used this rifle a couple of times in the past, so I know what I paid for and about its current capabilities with factory ammo and reloads.

Main purpose will be precision shooting and hunting rifle as well.
As for target shooting, there is hardly any chance to go out to 1000 yds around here, I'll be stuck with 300 mainly to max. 600 yds occasionally.

Since this is the first bolt action I own, I have a couple of questions:

With the high 1.09'' QRW-rings the scope sits way to high for me.
I know I'll need a cheek riser anyway, yet I would like to get a pair of lower rings.
Currently there is a clearance of 0.23'' between the front scope bell and the barrel.
This seems large enough to be halved at least.
Is there any rule of thumb for a minimum distance I must stick to?

As for the stock, I'll probably end up with a McMillan A3 like this:

Are these ready for drop-in or do they need any further bedding or processing to be used?
Will these type of McMillans already include the capability to use AI box magazines or is that an extra option I need to order (and pay for)?
Is the A3-stock going to rise the cheek position in such, that the mid-height rings might be too low then? Or to put it the other way round, shall I first change the stock and then the rings according to the stock?

Last question, the rifle has the 20'' BBL with 1:12 twist. Is this rate going to stabilize bullets beyond 175 or 180 gr up to maybe 200 or more well enough for hunting purpose?

Sorry for all these questions at once.
I appreciate your input.

u cant get any lower with the rings, just grab a stock pack, and shim under it with foam camp matt pieces to get your hight.. till u get the A5, then it wont matter

the A5, it dont "need" bedding, but wont hurt..

use AI box magazines... depends, when ordering see if included or not

175 match, yes, 180/200 hunting yes. 200 match, not vary well

If you're not shooting beyond 600, I would shoot 169 smks for target, and the 169 nosler made ballistic silver tips.
Damn near exact same dope, and the 169 ballistic silver tips work every time.

I run heavy bullets in my 700 SPS 20" 12 twist. I can get good groups with 185 and 210gr bullets but they are not 100% stable so this means you will lose some ballistic coefficient.

Here are the numbers I am getting with my handloads on the heavier. Shorter bullets than I list will stabilize better.
@sea level 59 degrees(actual BCs are calculated)
185 Berger OTM(1.345" @2580fps) possible BC @100% stable= .283 G7, actual BC I get with the 12 twist= .274G7 3% loss SG=1.37

210 Berger LRBT(1.450" @2500fps) possible BC @100% stable= .320 G7, actual BC I get with the 12 twist= .296G7 8% loss SG=1.25

These below were not stable enough in the 12 twist to group at all. I got them for my new 10 twist bbl
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
230 Berger OTM(1.600" @2340fps) possible BC @100% stable= .368 G7, actual BC I get with the 12 twist= .314G7 15% loss SG=1.01

230 Berger HYB MCH(1.680" @2340fps) possible BC @100% stable= .380 G7, actual BC I get with the 12 twist= .309G7 19% loss SG=.874

Just curious popnfresh, why are you shooting such heavy bullets w/ a 308?

Although lighter bullets may shoot flatter, heavier high BC bullets retain energy better and have less wind drift.

Look at the BCs of the heavies compared to the 155-178s, best G7 in that range is .259. I like to experiment.

The 230OTM with my MV is supersonic to 1270 yds(in the10 twist bbl I have waiting)
The 175SMK with my MV is supersonic to only 970 yards

I also have a 90gr SMK load for my 18" ar that is supersonic to 1010 yards.
