| Is it as good of a caliber as I've been reading? I've been reading about it lately and its really got me wondering if I want one. It seems like it should be able to do just fine as a long range gun, getting close to 3400 FPS with 100gr hand loads, and that with a good 120gr bullet it can (supposedly) drop most deer where they stand at 350m. It seems like it would be a great dual purpose gun, but I just haven't read about it much unless I go looking for it. Any first hand experience would be great |

No answer although this round intrigues me. How is the recoil on it? I need something with low recoil yet love the numbers on this round. I haven't had a ton of experience with this round yet, I've only shot maybe five rounds of it, but it didn't seem to have much recoil at all. I'd compare it to a .308 in felt recoil |
| I have a Ruger No1 in 25-06. It's a tack-driver with lighter bullets but it will barely stabilize a 115gr VLD. It's still sub-MOA with the 115gr VLDs, but it's much more accurate with the lighter bullets. Don't expect to get 3,200fps with 120gr. I'm already well into he pressure signs at 3,100fps with the 115gr. The ballistics are fantastic though. Flat flat flat. I've shot it out to 900yrds and spotters watching the bullet trace all comment about that. It's one of great things about using it as a hunting round. It's pretty much a laser. |

How far out do you take it when hunting? And in your mind is it strictly a deer round, or at least at closer ranges is it capable of bigger game like cow elk? |

I would say recoil is right between a 243 and 270, similar to a 7mm08. They do tend to be loud, as there is a lot of powder behind a .25 caliber bullet. |

It will work on bigger game but isn't ideal. A 120 grain partition or ttsx will penetrate plenty for elk. What to keep it pretty short range because you need the smaller bullet to open up wide and velocity should be above 2400 fps. So probably 200 yards on elk with one of the above mentioned bullets. Deer should be fine out to 400 or 500 yards. I had a savage model 110 in the caliber years ago. It is hard on bullets up close and their isn't a ton of bullet weight so you have to use a premium bullet or be careful not to hit heavy bone. |

Only game I ever wounded and didn't recover was a cow elk with a .25-06 at about 125 yds. High shoulder shot with a 120 gr partition. Followed her for miles (too quickly, I didn't give her a chance to lay down and stiffen up).
I have a Sako .25-06. I think it's a great antelope or whitetail round. It wouldn't be my first choice for big mulies or elk. If those are in your plans I'd go to a .270 if you are wanting to stay in that family of cartridges. |

Found a Model 70 bench rest rifle with a custom barrel in 25-06 (should have bought it still self kicking ass) and it had a bunch of data sharpied on the barrel. Too much was rubbed off to get the full scoop but it appeared to have won a few matches at what appeared to be 600 yards?
edit- barrel was like 1 1/4" or thicker dia, 28-30" or so long, in the white, looked bead blasted (no rust) which is why the marker was visible. |

Kills deer like lightening hit them. Shot many here in PA with my Rem 700.
Caliber is a barrel burner, you'll only get about 1200 rounds before the throat is burnt out too long to seat bullets in the case. I burnt out two barrels on mine then went .280 Remington. Shoot it sparingly if you want to keep it. As above, very loud. Very effective on deer, not many choices for good real long range precision bullets. I liked the 120 Sierra HP and the 117 Sierra BTSP. |
