I am working on my first precision build, so this might be a silly question. I plan to use the receiver lapping tool from Brownells to square the face of the receiver. My question is about the barrel nut. If the receiver is square but the barrel nut isn't, will that defeat the purpose of squaring the receiver?

The thread will self center when you tighten it from the difference in the tolerances of each thread.

if the face of the flange on the nut  that touches the barrel extension is out of whack, that would me more of a problem.

I was thinking more about the flange that holds the extension to the receiver

Yes, that also. It was turned on a lathe so it should be flat but after being tightened on the barrel is could distort I suppose
