Looking for  a quality scope for my new savage 10fcp 308. Looking for something that will let me get good hits in the 500-600 yard range. Right now I have about $600 saved for just the scope and am willing to save more for the right one if I need to.

You missed the optics forum just a few forums down from bolt guns. There is a tacked thread with tons of info. click here

That being said, I recently picked up a Vortex Viper HS-T for $550 and I really like it.

Are you looking at FFP(first focal plane) or SFP(second focal plane)? If you are not sure what I am talking about, research it a little bit.

In short, the reticle size remains static in SFP, while the reticle in a FFP optic will magnify along with the sight picture. FFP is nice because the reticle is always to size in comparison to the sight picture. So if you need to make an adjustment, read the reticle, then make your adjustment on the scope. On SFP you need to be on the highest mag, so the reticle is correctly calibrated to the sight picture, then make adjustments that way. I personally prefer FFP since the reticle to true to size at any mag factor. FFP optics are more expensive.

I am a fan on Vortex Optics, particularly, their PST line. Their Crossfire line felt to cheap for me, even on a 22. It wasn't as well refined as their PST line.

I've been seeing their 2.5-10x FFP used for around your price point in the EE. Or if you want or are ok with SFP, I saw some used Vortex PST 4-16 SFP optics.

Take your time to do your research on features and determine what you need and like. Look at magnification range, reticles, SFP vs. FFP, MOA vs. Mil, etc., then read some reviews from actual users. Personally, I would save a little bit more money, if possible. When you get to the $800-$1000 range, things really start to open up and there's a lot more for the money in that range, as opposed to the $500-600 range, in my opinion. It will be worth the time and effort to wait, research and save up a little more.

OP, if you are military or a vet contact vortex for pricing on their PST FFP, 6-24 or 4-16. It;s a pretty good discount.  I love my PST 6-24x50.

I just bought a Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50, for the price it's a great scope (it was $639) but the Viper HS-T 4-16x44 is $570.

The Viper HS-T combines features of the HS and PST and it makes a wonderful scope for the price.
