I only shoot target from 100m to 500m (military range)
I need help choosing one of the below scopes or up to 16x power fixed or variable with clear and bright glass around $500-$600. I'm not sure if fixed scope is practical even though I usually shoot with max magnification even with variable scopes. Would you please tell me pros and cons for those below: 1. Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 Riflescope 2. Vortex 4-16x44 Viper HS-T Riflescope (VMR-1 MRAD Reticle) 3. Vortex 4-16x42 Diamondback HP Riflescope (Dead-Hold BDC Reticle) 4. Vortex 6.5-20x50 Viper PA Riflescope 5. Viper 4-12x40 PA Riflescope 6. Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 LR Riflescope 7. Zeiss 4.5-14x50 AO MC Conquest Riflescope 8. Weaver 4-16x44 Grand Slam Riflescope 9. Leupold FX-3 12x40mm Adj. Obj. Target Matte Fine Duplex Riflescope 66830 Reticle: Fine Duplex 10. Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 or 4.5 - 14x50 w/z plex reticle 11. SWFA SS 3-15x42 Tactical Rifle Scope 12. SWFA SS 16x42 Tactical Riflescope 13. SWFA SS 12x42 Tactical Riflescope 14. Any other scopes not listed above that you can suggest. 10. Weaver 4.5-14x40 Grand Slam Riflescope 11. Weaver 6-20x40 Grand Slam Riflescope Thank you in advance. |

You're kidding, right? Does someone feed you and dress you too? You can do a google search on every one of those scopes and get as many reviews as you can possibly read. Put in a little effort of your own, then come back with some specific questions. Fpni. Gotta do a bit more research on your own first. |
| Following what the guys said before me do your research. But something that I will always mention is the SWFA SS 10x fixed scope without the fancy doo-dads on it is a great starter scope. You find out what you like or don't like about scopes and if you want to sell it after you figure all this out they hold their value. So if you really don't know what to get do this and after a while you will find out hey I never needed illumination or maybe that you could use less magnification... The list goes on. |

When you say "only shoot target" are you seeking sub MOA groups on paper targets for high score, or paper torsos or steel plates? Are the distances fixed, like exactly 100, 200 . . . 500 meter intervals or can targets be set up anywhere between 100 and 500? Will ambient light change, from bright to very low? Will targets be high contrast or low? What rifle and its capabilities?
The answer affects magnification (fixed vs zoom and range), turret style and reticle design. I could select several of your choices for some possible scenarios and none of them for other scenarios in your vague description. Fill in some detail. Paper sub MOA benchrest at only one specific range suggests a high power fixed scope with fine crosshairs and very precise 1/8" per click tall capped turrets. If benchrest shooting at varying range, perhaps a milrad or MOA turret scope , also fixed high power but maybe a fine center milrad or MOA BDC type for holdover and hold off. If you aren't sure and need more flexibility, get a variable power mil/mil scope in a more moderate range, topping out at 9 or 10x, no more than 12x. More detail, please. Lower power, better glass and accurate, repeatabile turret adjustments, combined with a reticle that matches your use (fine crosshairs are great on white paper, terrible in low light or dark background), is what you should be seeking, rather than focusing on power alone. |
