I just picked up an old rem 700 30-06.  It has a newer 4x12x40 scope on it.  The top turret cap has a r on it that matches the Remington logo.  I think this is a scope that comes on a package rifle/scope combo.  Who actually makes it and are they any good.  The rifle is just a hunter thin profile barrel ,wood stock.  Im not looking for anything super, 300 yds would be the longest shot ever, most being 100 yds.  I don't want to waste time, money or my shoulder if these wont hold zero and track.  If its not good what would you recommend on the cheap.  TIA, Chuck

It sounds like you have a package deal. It may actually be a decent scope, who knows. Call Remington and ask them, or look it upon the web. I know nothing about those scopes, but here is my tcw. I have been using an older, steel tubed Weaver fixed 4 power scope on my Husqvarna .270 Winchester for over 30 years. I have used it out to 350 yards or so on Pronghorn and Mule Deer. Killed a lot of hogs and whitetails in Fla. and Ga. as well.
Never once did I feel underglassed. If I were in the market for a scope right now I would buy more Nikon goods. I have a P-223 on an AR 15, and a 4-12 Monarch on an AR 10. Perfectly adequate for everyday use. I have also owned Kahles, Hensoldt Wetzlar, and other high dollar glass. They did not make me a better shot.
Glass options always bring on arguments just like 9mm vs 45 etc.
IMHO what matters is this: does the scope track the square repeatedly. Can you see through it during the times of day you like to hunt (early/late). It is very easy to both overspend and underspend on glass. Read up on the scopes you are looking at. There are reviews all over the web. I have had a lifetime of success with Nikon, Weaver, Redfield, Burris and Simmons (on 22s) and the others named above.
There are a lot of brands I have not mentioned, that are excellent, top shelf goods. I just never felt the need to buy them as my needs were mets elsewhere.
SWFA is a good place to start shopping. Good luck.

Thanks, I looked around on the web and found nothing, hence the post here.  I was going to try it out this weekend but don't want to blow 20-30$ on ammo for nothing.

I had the same scope and rifle combo in a 22-250 many years ago, Scope was nothing special, depends on your budget, but I would not even waste time sighting it in. Buy  something worth your time..I think I had it on the gun for about 6 months before I gave it away, It held zero for minute of woodchuck fine, but the glass got really foggy and ultimately had to go...

Glass provides function in accordance with its cost. For something really high quality as a hunting scope and not too expensive, I'd go Leupold VX1 or VX2. VX3 are the best in that line but they cost a good bit more. That's a scope for a lifetime.

A decent optic is also a Weaver Tactical Grand Slam - from MidwayUSA. They are $300. 1" tubes, mildot, mil/mil turrets reticle. Glass is nice for the price range. Turrets have solid detents. 3-10 mag power. Get some decent rings, and you should be good to go.
