Howdy folks, looking for some advice on choosing broadheads for hunting.  2-blade or 3-blade?  Fixed or mechanical?  They're fairly pricey to just go buy 6 or 7 different types and try them all, so how did you all figure out where to start?

Thanks,

Muzzy 3 blades are inexpensive and have killed many deer.

I've shot Muzzy 3-blades for years. They're sharp, easily tuned, durable, and there's no moving parts to fail.

I started using rage 2 blade a couple years ago, they are incredible!  They fly just like field points, and they make huge holes.  I wish I would have taken pictures of my blood trails so you could see them, they looked like highways.  I would highly recommend giving them a try I was pretty amazed.

I like the G5 Striker Magnum.   125 gr. 1.5" cutting diameter, three blade fixed.

Makes a nice blood trail.

I've been able to watch them drop with Grim Reapers.

How did you settle on the 2 blade over the 3 blade?  All the guys at my local archery shop really like the Rage broadheads.

I have been using Spitfire mechanicals.

Got my first shot off last week. Arrow penetrated both sides of the ribcage from a 10 yard shot ( 62 lb Mathews Switchback XT ) and GT Hunter arrows 100 grain Spitfires.

However the arrow got stuck in the deer somehow and fell out or was pulled out about 50 feet into his run. I saw him bound off with the lighted nock going with him.

The wound channel was large and the blood trail was huge though. I don't know why the arrow did not pass through. The exit wound was large.

I chose the two blade because its a more simple design, and the cutting diameter is larger than the three blade.  I have yet to have one not expand.  Go to youtube and check out some of the videos on there.

I'm using Ramcats this year and really like them.  They flew identical to my field points in three different bows and the heads are tough.  Replacement blades are cheap and they hit hard.

No need to broadhead tune and flying perfectly out to 60 yards made life pretty simple.

Love the Grim Reapers.  I shoot the 1 3/4" cut 125 grain Razortips.

Spitfire Maxx.

Wicked.......

My friend just whacked a doe tonight at 9 yards with a muzzy fixed. Complete pass through (70 lb Bow)
Doe went 20 yards and tipped over. By the time he got to her she was stone cold dead.  Sadly almost
no blood, but she expired 20 yards from where she got shot. No tracking necessary

I've got over 50 kills with 125gr spitfire 3 blades.  I've lost 1 deer, and that was all me putting it in the shoulder blade.
I like them b/c they do not have an o-ring design, that's something I personally don't prefer on a mechanical.

I have many kills with muzzy 3 blades prior to switching to mechanicals in '94, but once I did, I  never switched back.

How did I decide?  I followed the first blood trail after shooting one with a spitfire.  Looked like  she had a can of red krylon hanging off each side of her running through the woods.  I also like the fact that the spitfires are dialed right in the way my field points are, that's something I couldn't get from a fixed blade or the rage's for sure.   I tried the rage's 2 yrs ago I think.  They were 9" high and 6" off where my spitfire's were.  Yes, I could dial them in, but again, spitfires and field points are dead on for me.  I have a friend that loves and swears by the rages, I also know someone in this forum that had a very bad experience with them.    It's the risk you take with bow hunting.  The 1 deer I lost using spitfires was the nicest buck I've ever shot.

Any idea why my arrow didn't go straight through the deer. I could see the lighted nock in the entry wound as he ran off. It looked like even theough there is a 3 pronged 2 inch hole in his opposite rib cage, that the fletching got hung up in the entry wound.

Muzzy because if you do hit bone it doesn't matter.
I have around 30 bow kills with Muzzy 3 blade 125 grain I will never shoot anything else.

Part of the decision will depend on your setup.  What is your draw weight and draw length?  Lower poundage and shorter draw length would work better with fixed blades, as mechanicals require more KE to open up and get pass throughs.

Personally, I use 2-blade fixed broadheads.  Specifically, Red Feather Archery's RazorHawk and German-Kinetics SilverFlame 125XL broadheads.  My son has some Red Feather Archery Phoenix 3-blade broadheads that are also excellent.

These broadheads are not cheapo, toss-the-blades-put-new-ones-in mass produced broadheads.  These are designed for folks who prefer to buy a set of broadheads and sharpen them, use them, resharpen them, use them, resharpen them, etc.  They are made from much tougher steel than the thinner replaceable blade broadheads, so they tend to last a bit longer.  The Phoenix and RazorHawks are $35/3-pack, but you don't have to keep buying replacement blades.  They are even less expensive than comparable broadheads like the G5 Montec and NAP Hellrazor (and less expensive and better penetrators than the Rage).
