On trucks with non adjustable door hinges, I have used a portapower.  On my 48, I had to adjust the actual door opening with the hydraulic ram, as it was out of proportion.

Also, this I built with a 472 engine:

OP, those vent boxes that hide under the rear edge of the front fenders is usually a rot monster long before the inner rocker.  It looks like yours may be intact, which is an anomaly.

Also, I built a couple of these.  I trash all of the factory air/heat things and install Vintage Air.  They have a kit that is much cleaner than the factory stuff and fits perfectly.  Air blows super cold.

Yeah, my rocker boxes are pretty good. Nice rig!

I find myself looking for a new set of wheels, Looking for 17s. I would like to stay with a 35x12.50 tire. what width and backspacing do I need? this will not be a wheeling machine. Mostly street, with a few prairie dog towns thrown in.

Well as far as wheels go, I figure I need about 4-4.5" of backspace. A -12 or -13 offset.

Was rudely awakened this morning by a semi driver... Mocked up some new sheet metal today! Now I have to tear it all back apart. Fenders and core support are fitting great. Inner fenders are a total bitch to get lined up though.

Got tired of looking at gaping holes today so I finished a & b pillar patches, inner and outer rockers and got the quarter panel patch tacked in. My knees are done for the day.

Today's progress: not much. Going into overhaul next week, so I'll be working 5-10s plus whatever overtime I can get.

Welded in, then used the stud welder to get everything within 1/16th.

well yesterday was a slow day at work, so I was thinking about temperature senders, calibrating my speedometer, and going from a manual oil pressure gauge to electrical, so I don't risk dripping oil in the cab.

Temperature sender: The stock button or nail head style sender for these trucks is threaded 1/2"NPT. all newer small blocks are threaded 3/8. The 1/2" one is the only one that will read correctly with the factory gauge, because ohms or something. There is a member over on 67-72chevytrucks.com that is turning down the old style senders and rethreading them to 3/8. There are also people drilling/tapping the hole in the head of their new engines to 1/2".

I don't really like either of those options.

Calibrating my speedometer:

Blueprint wants me to run their 30 weight break in oil for 500 miles. I need a correct speedometer to do this. Also, using Gps speed on my phone and then figuring out what RPM that is... it's a pain.

oil pressure line: pretty self explanatory...

So I ordered a dakota digital gauge cluster with gps speedo.

Also, the way I figure it, between end of may and mid june I should be able to order new engine and trans.

Still waiting on my headers that I ordered ~3 weeks ago. Called Hedman-Hustler yesterday as I didnt get a confirmation email after I ordered, but everything sounds like its all good on their end.

So, I need this damn weather to warm up so I can get my engine bay painted. then I can get serious about the motor/trans swap.

I love that body style! It’s nice to see survives running around here in the PNW since we don’t use salt but I am just not in any position to own one right now so consider this an OST so that I can live vicariously through you.

Ordered new booster and master cylinder. Master was leaking out the back.

Scuffed and ready for primer

Is this what you sprayed the firewall/inner fenders in?

Is the exterior going to be the same or different?

New booster/master cylinder installed last weekend, bled rear brakes and went to bleed the fronts and the damn bleeder valves were seized in the calipers. Just got new calipers installed and bled today. I am fucking done with brakes.

Now I'm waiting for my latest summit order, so I can install my new American auto wire harnesses. Got all new fluids for transfer case and diffs, forgot to get silicone though. Might grab new cover gaskets too.

Oh, new transmission and stall converter is coming in the latest summit order too.

Well, drained the goop out of the transfer case, looked like a mix of atf and old 80-90. Replaced with Lucas 80-90. Drained both diffs. Rear diff juice was nasty.

Sealed both diffs back up, waiting overnight for sealant to dry then I'll throw some new 80-90 in them.

Took a fender out into the sunshine for a little inspiration.

Been a long day. ER, found out my great uncle died right after that. Trying to install this new wiring harness with new switches, while keeping wiring for digital gauges in my head, and hiding wires in the process.

Not so patiently waiting for my wire crimpers in the mail.

Ok, time for an update before my new 383 shows up in my driveway. Been working a shitload of overtime. This is the first two day weekend I've had in a while. Got a lot done this morning.

June 5 I got my new headers in the mail.

Also got my heater box painted and installed. Also, new transmotion.

Ordered a new transmotion shift lever, but it was wrong. Had to extend it about an inch. Got it painted this morning.

Along with headers (used VHT header paint), fender to core support corners, and alternator bracket.

Also finished undercoating.

Also got my passenger quarter patch bodywork done and primed.

Feels good having new shit ready to go on. Also got my sport mirrors , need to figure out how to hold them against the door so I can make sure I like the position.

Damn, man! Looks great! That will be a sweet rig!

I fought with my damn trans kickdown cable/ trans kickdown valve wire for like 3 hours today. That was just dumb. The way it was, the cable wouldn't pull the wire through the hood of the cable, and trying to get pliers between it and the trans housing was a bitch.

Finally got it tweaked just right though. Now it just moves freely through the cable housing.

Also got trans lines on, had to go to the parts store for an oring for the dipstick tube.

Should be getting tci brand trans fluid Tuesday, so I can fill the stall converter, add a few quarts to the trans, and be ready to stab the new motor.

Lovin’ your build!  Sometimes I wish I could get back into this. Just no place to do it since I retired and moved to a smaller home. Now I have to live vicariously through and offer advise to my son building restomod Corvettes.

Back on page one you mentioned delegating the charcoal can.  I’d put that back on. You’ll be smelling gas fumes all the time without it.   Especially if you garage park it.   I want to add one to my ‘66 Mustang.

Thanks bud. I would consider putting a charcoal can on if I had one, and knew how it hooks up.  From the research I've done it sounds like I can just plug that line at the tank, and run a vented gas cap.

Big update: yesterday I got home and something was sitting in the driveway...

About an hour later it was installed.

I just got done bolting the stall converter to the flex plate. Off to work.

It'll be same color as the firewall, fenderwells, and inner fenders. Phantom black metallic. I went to school for bodywork 18 years ago, but quickly realized it is a passion, and I didn't want to do it for anyone else.

Just remember, if you run it in high water like we do here in the gulf coast, these vent lines can always be repurposed to vent axles and transmissions above the fording depth. This saved me in tropical storm Allison years ago when i had sustained water above the door handles on my XJ. I had everything vented up higher than the cowl.

Worked on exhaust most of today.

After I got all that crap done I got my oil pressure and temp sensors hooked up, put spark plugs back in and hooked up plug wires, and used the loom things that came with the engine. Swapped the long water pump for a short one a buddy gave me, test fit a billet crank pulley to find it wouldn't work. Put power steering pump and alternator on. Been a hell of a day.

first real problem... stock trans kickdown cable bracket will not work without heavy modification. stock one bolted to the rear two intake manifold bolts. As you can see, The new engine intake bolts are drilled vertically, instead of the 23* or whatever into the head. Also, the bolt pattern is different. The last two bolts are around 1/2" farther apart than OE. Holley makes a bracket for a 700R4, for the kickdown and throttle cables that bolts to the carb foot. I wonder what the difference is, besides length to the lever on the carb.

A couple more problems, and a bit more progress.

First, when I changed out my heater core, I must have put the new one in upside down. Got that fixed. Went to plumb it, and the damn carb fuel supply pipe is square in the way. I don't even think I can put a 90 there, as a 90 will hit the manifold maybe. 90 off the other side of the thermostat?

Installed new belts, fan clutch.

Modified my old trans kickdown bracket, it works. Really hoping new throttle cable is right and gets here this week.

Also ordered a Holley brand throttle/kickdown cable bracket that bolts to the two carb studs on one side. Will look a lot better, and more adjustability. Hopefully carquest pulls through and gets my rad hoses tomorrow, so I can play with the idea of filling it with some cool juice.

After I got all that figured out I kind of just went on autopilot... Just trying to stay up. Start rotating shifts again at work tomorrow night.

Starting to look like my old blazer again!
Link Posted: 6/25/2024 4:41:43 PM EDT
[#39]
I added oil after I put new rad hoses on today, and what did I spy?

Roller rockers!

The 90* heater hose fitting was literally worse than the straight one. No way it was going to work. Here's to hoping the one from summit works. That order is supposed to be here tomorrow.

If it sounds like I'm trying my best to have this damn thing running and driving this weekend, it's because a year ago that was my goal. Unfortunately, money got tight last year, and didn't get started on it until March of this year.

Why this weekend? My hometown (~2000 in population) does a big festival type event once a year, sports, food trucks, fireworks, brew fest, arm wrestling, etc etc. it's called Colstrip Days. Basically a full weekend party. I wanted to be in the car show this year. Doesn't look like it's going to happen. Even if I do get my new throttle cable in time, I still have a shitload of wiring to do. It's really not helping that I am working nights this week. Hmm. I might be able to take Wednesday and Thursday night off.......
