A buddy asked me to build a gun rack for his hunting camp so that the rifles and shotguns can stay somewhat organized, out of the way, and most importantly accessible.  Since I have a few other wood working projects that I need to get done I decided to get this one done first so that I can get my area cleared up and get this wood out of the way.  These are the pics from today, it still needs to get painted and the felt put on to protect the finish of any of the blued guns.

The first 5 pics are of the board that makes the top of the rack.  The holes are drilled at 1 3/4 inches and the cut outs are 1 1/4 inches at the holes.  This will help keep any of the guns from falling out if they get bumped since the neck area is slightly thinner.  I also added some long screws to the front so that those sections don't get knocked off accidently as the wood continues to dry out.

The top and back are done and working on the base.  Because the rifles will have scopes on them I had to give enough room for them to fit in the rack completely and still have a little space for the scope.  I didn't want them resting on their scopes.  Since my 5R has the 50mm Vortex Viper I decided that probably any of the others should fir without too much difficulty.

I also wanted to make sure that the butt of the weapons didn't want to turn in the rack so I added this small piece across the bottom to hold them all straight.  I also needed something to help hold the two pieces of 2x6 together firmly that make up the base.

I really debated about where to end this wall on the side.  In the end I took it all the way out to the front edge so that it would be less likely to get bumped and also offer a little more protection to the weapons inside of the rack.

I also needed to make sure several types of weapons would fit into it easily.

The front site for the clone barely fits in but since I don't expect to ever take it to the hunting camp I'm not worried about that one.  Everything else fit fine, the scope on the 5R has about 3/8 inch of clearance.  I have some black felt that I will add later on and it is going to get painted black since that is what I have extra of in the paint locker.

I always enjoyed the way they shoot, now only if I could hit the stupid clays.

Looks great.  There's always that one rifle that barely fits. If you devise a sliding type upper rest that can raise/lower to a suitable position for that one rifle, you'll make your fortune.

I have actually been thinking about that, realistically it wouldn't be all that difficult.
