Does it have to have a bezel or just meet capabilities specs?

How are you liking that one?  I am tempted to get rid of a couple other Seiko's and just go with that one.

What movement is in that Seiko? Hack? Manual winding?

It’s the 6R15 movement.  Manual winding option and hacking.  Their nicest movement really without stepping into the Grand Seiko territory.  The 53 version is blue dial with rubber...identical otherwise.

I’m really loving it.  Wearing it more often than my Planet Ocean.  Of course, I’d also feel less pissed about smashing a $1,000 piece over a $5,500 one.

Meh...comparable to the 4R36 movement in the Turtle. I prefer the date/day option, personally.

It is similar to the 4R, but the day date is definitely not my thing.

I am having a hard time understanding why Seiko thinks they can charge nearly double what I paid for my Prospex Turtle.

Probably just because some love the retro look/feel and will pay for it - as they seem to be sold out most of the time.  The domed sapphire crystal is a nice upgrade (not $400 obviously).

ETA: The SBDC also has a very nice DiaShield coating.  After comparing it with my brother's Prospex Turtle, there is a very noticeable quality different throughout the watch.

The Prosex Turtle is quite retro looking and a fitting homage to the original Turtle. Correct about the domed crystal not even close to $400. This sapphire, which includes an etched sea turtle TDC, cost me just over $120 installed, pressure tested and shipped back...

As the owner of an original 6309, I feel compelled to say that I hate the turtle nickname and reject its use for the original watches. Keep it to your wannabees.

(I own one also, and agree that it's a nice homage.)

I was a huge fan of day date.
Loved my Seiko 6309.

As I am about to turn 50 and need reading glasses,
I found I now enjoy nondate versions.

High end is overrated... my Omega and Breitling get no wrist time. My Marathon, Glycine, and Deep Blues seem to get more wrist time these days.

I like the more expensive watches, but I'm always worried about damaging them.

Seiko needs to "re-issue" that, and not screw it up by super-sizing it.

Yep.
Got my first 6309 after basic, infantry, Airborne, and RIP at Fort Benning.
Great lume for the first five years or so, and the day date was useful.

I finally got a Sub about ten years after the Seiko, and hated just the date.  I got the sub instead of the SD because I liked the cyclops.

Now,
My favorite is one of the Australian Watchco new “1968 ish” SM300.

I should get a vintage no date Sub I think.  Maybe a 14060 to go with my 16610.  Or the SD from that era.

I've posted this before in the other watch thread but a really like it so here you go.
2007 Ulysse Nardin Blue Surf.  42.7mm, cyclops is on the inside of the crystal so it doesn't stick up like a traditional magnifier on Rolex. Display back shows the modified ETA 2892 Chronometer grade movement with that date at 6 and a power reserve indicator at 12, both added on by UN by a 7 jewel module to the blue movement with blue rotor. Lume is still great and the dial/indices are very well done, a pleasure to look at.
This one keeps exceptional time and I wear it most often, sometimes on the amazing UN rubber/titanium strap, sometimes on a $12 Barton's NATO.

I will try and post up my 6309 this week. It should be back from its first service in 38 years tomorrow!

My 39 year old 6309-7049 came back today from Paul’s in Sacramento. I’ve had it for 35 years so I believe this to be the first actual service. No exterior or dial/hand work was done but there were many worn out parts inside from what I was told. Waiting for the Uncle Seiko tropical band to arrive.
