I've been saving for a 36mm Explorer for a while. I'm at the point, I could jump on a P39 instead. This thread makes it hard for me to stay focused and not buy a P39 instead.

Well, I daily drive a Breitling Chrono Avenger, which is 44mm...assuming the 42 is the diameter of the watch...the Breitling also 17.6mm thick (read: thicker than a PB&J sandwich )
The 42 would probably fit me just fine - it should be positively small compared to what I'm currently used to I was more wondering if you noticed/cared about the missing date and you were thinking of changing it up, or if it was something you never cared about in the first place... |

View Quote It should wear perfectly! I’ve historically always had a no date in the rotation over the past few years, some years as the primary. A date would be nice but it’s not a deal breaker. Heh! So first few nights with it I left it flat, face up when I slept - it wound up losing a total of 4 seconds for the 2 days I had it on the table that way while I slept. I then left it face DOWN on the table, flat, while I slept...it stopped losing time. Fast forward to today, it's now down about 2 seconds...so it's getting time back, leaving it face down and flat while I sleep. I expect in a couple of days it should catch up by itself.
Way better than my Breitling...that lost broadly about 4-5 minutes every 30 days. |

So I set it again to a full minute ahead on the dot on like the 2nd or 3rd of this month. It again lost some 15 seconds over the first couple of days, maybe a little more...then it stabilized - no more time loss, if I left the watch face down while I slept. The last 5 or so nights I've been leaving it face up while I slept - the watch has fallen to 28 seconds ahead - it seems at night it loses ~4 seconds, give or take, with the watch facing up. Facing down, it doesn't lose any time at all, at least none that I could roughly detect over a few weeks. I guess my main takeaway is if you have a 42 and need to reset the date - build in 30 or so seconds of slack for the watch time to even out over a couple days, if you're one of those like me who set your watch compared to something that either gets a nightly radio broadcast or gets it's time from NTP https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/22779/IMG_2264-2899557.jpg View Quote @Evil_Ed weird experience and not sure it's universal. I set my 42 at the same date, and it's been losing ~1 second a day. I wear it to sleep, shower, lift, every day but one this month. I'm at ~26 seconds slow. and it's been the one a day loss, not steady for a few days then a big swing. Maybe try sleeping in it? |

I love my Black Bay and have been set on waiting for an Explorer 1 to become available at my AD (whenever that may be) to fill the role as a sort of timeless "do all" watch, but this thread has really got me wanting a Pelagos. All the Rolex secondary hype and games the ADs play has just gotten so tiresome that I'm kind of over it.
OP, that P39 looks like a hell of a watch. I have a few divers in the 41mm-44mm range so I have been wanting to get something a little smaller. The P39 looks like it may fit the bill perfectly. |

I bought one back in March. I initially viewed it as the perfect watch, but for some reason I've found it somewhat boring. I still like it, specifically the square indices, titanium, and adjustable clasp. I think the reasons I find it boring is because it is too similar to a Submariner, and there isnt anything very exciting about it. I get more enjoyment wearing my SLA037. Everything about this Seiko is impressive, the dial, indices, smooth sweeping second hand, case, even the crystal looks neat. I have an elastic/nylon strap on the way from Erika's for it.
I plan on keeping the Pelagos 39, but it doesnt press my watch enthusiast button. In fact, right now I'm wearing the Pelagos, I think I need to change back to the Seiko. I guess that is somewhat negative, but that is my review of my Pelagos 39. It is a nice watch, it just isn't very interesting (to me). |
