I told my in laws to stock up on non perishables.  They have about 2 weeks worth of food currently (mostly rice and instant noodles).  There aren't really canned goods in China.  Maybe in the Western grocery stores but I don't remember seeing any.

If I had family in China I'd be trying to get them out of the country right now.

BBC says roads are not officially closed but roadblocks have been reported and citizens have been told not to try to leave.

I can't imagine a lot of deliveries coming in if the drivers won't be allowed back out after dropping their load.

They were actually going to visit the US in 2 weeks.  The airport is now shut down and so is all public transportation.  They don't have a car or know how to drive so they are basically shutting themselves in.  They cancelled all the New Year plans/parties this weekend.

Not much else they can do.

Worry about water more than food. A gallon of bleach and knowing how much to add to water to sanitize it is invaluable should municipal water become suspect (e.g. if insufficient water treatment chemicals make it in to the city).

Hunkering down is about all they can do.

I'm honestly surprised it's not cutoff already.  Now with suspected cases in the UK you've got to wonder where it turns up next, incubation time seems to be 3 to 5 days.

Edited to add:

You're exactly right.

Remember this from 2017? https://www.nature.com/news/inside-the-chinese-lab-poised-to-study-world-s-most-dangerous-pathogens-1.21487

A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

It may be in Texas

https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/suspected-case-of-coronavirus-under-investigation-in-brazos-county

The Brazos County Health District is investigating a suspected case of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.

The patient traveled from Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus originated, health officials say.

Now they have 7 cities quarantined.

The numbers must be much worse than the govt is saying.

Right? There are substantial economic costs to the measures they are taking.
Wuhan has a GDP of $224 billion.

You don't shut down a city with a GDP of San Diego or Denver  without a damn good reason.
that is right.

Viruses that kill hosts too quickly or in too high percentages have a lower chance of becoming real catastrophes than those which incubate asympotmatically for a bit, and dont Kill all the hosts. They need to leave some hosts alive to be carriers.  Viruses that kill 90% of infected within 2 days are not that risky from a pandemic perspective.

An ideal "apocalypse virus" has
A) greater time for the the virus to spread unnoticed, i.e. ~10 days
B) does not kill all hosts, allowing some asymptomatic hosts to become vectors

Brazos County = College Station = Texas A&M. What a great place with 60,000 students for this thing to spread like wildfire.
