An SMG that weighs almost as much as an M1 and a complicated Russian gun.  Try a Sten.  Simple, made in back room shops, and made from left-over pipe scraps.

When trying to sell a weapons system or a individual gun that is not the way to go about doing it. Neither is that a good way to support your contention that the weapons is better than others of the same era.Try: easy to maintain, reliable, robust, design for easy manufacturing, uncomplicated. Describing as being made from garbage....

Of those two, the Thompson.

Overall, THIS:

ETA: If we discount weapons that were classified as different things at different times*, then it's a close race between the Thompson and the MP-40.

* The MKb-42(H)/MP-43/MP-44/StG-44 was, as the names indicate, variously known as a "Machine carbine", machine pistol/SMG, and finally an assault rifle...Sooo...Technically....

Not a SMG.

PPSH= reliable, stamped, high capacity, high rate, 7.62x25 beats 9mm and 45acp and I own a Thompson.

M1 Garand  9.5 lb

Do you know how much a steel 30 round mag of 230gr FMJ weigh? Almost 2 lbs!

I'm sorry, I thought we were talking about what made them great for war time.  The Sten was heralded as a great gun because they could be made in great numbers due to their simplicity in materials and design.

If I was trying to sell you some H&K BS I'm sure the OP would have asked for it.

Well it popped out enough bullets to end the Reich.

It popped out enough bullets to be a favored pick up of the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS on the Eastern Front.

I'm sure all of the other countries that helped would like some credit!  Russia didn't win the war on it's own, and they didn't supply weapons to the rest of the allies!  Also is now a bad time to point out that something like twice as many Russians died as Germans?  I'm thinking the tsunami of Russian blood and corpse-parts may have helped them.

As for the PPSH-41 being a favorite pickup, yhea, it was.  They captured them in droves during the initial 1941 ass-kicking they dished out, and already had compatible ammunition (7.63mm Mauser) in the supply line.  It made a nice weapon for troops otherwise only equipped with a bolt action rifle to grab up.

Russians had no problem picking up German weapons either, BTW!  They were putting Kar-98K rifles into service whenever they had the chance, even though it didn't shoot ammunition they had on hand.

In terms of body count either the MP-40 or Suomi, a LOT of Russians died up close and personal.  The Finns or The Germans put most of them in the dirt.

IIRC the story associated with this stated it was actually used in house clearing.
