In the 1980s movie Top Gun, the revolutionary “MiG-28s” operated by the enemy air force were actually F-5E Tiger IIs, derived from a family of fighters whose design concept dates back to the mid 1950s. The F-5 family of aircraft were produced in large numbers, as they were an extremely popular export item. Many are still operated by countries around the world, and the US Air Force used them for many years as “aggressor” aircraft in Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT). They were, and remain, excellent for simulating similarly small, low profile adversaries like the MiG-21s and MiG-19s that gave American pilots such trouble over Vietnam. Or the IAF MiG-21s that caused trouble at COPE India, for that matter.

“F-5Ns” are still routinely flown by American Navy and Marines adversary squadrons in training exercises, where they simulate small, low-cross-section (and hence hard to spot) enemies. Keeping them in service requires maintenance contracts – and some timely help from the Swiss also came in handy…

I've worked with several F-5 we shipped back to you !

We still operate them.. This plane is the coolest toy plane on earth.

Really, an airfield with F5s looks like an elitist aero club

Took these in 2007 if I remember well

F20s were great if you wanted to bomb the end of your own runway.

Thats what I have heard in the past.

Not enough legs.   But really good on performance and could fight most fighters of the time.

Extra gas, even with refueling limited weapons.

412 Moose Squadron FTMFW !
The 'CF-5' took over from the F-104 and the F-101 Voodo until they were replaced by the CF-18.

I grew up with the F-86 transition into the 101's and 104's. When the F-5's came into play, it seemed like we acquire 500 of them overnight. The pilots loved them, and they packed one helluva load.

I'm not sure these days, but I think the newly renamed RCAF still has some serviceable F-5's on the tarmac with some seasoned pilots to demonstrate effective 'tudoring'.

Id like to brag a little here..

I have hauled a couple of these back from Switzerland over the last few years.  Yes, an F-5 fits in a C-130.

There will be even more Swiss F-5s on the market when they take delivery of their Gripens. I was almost going to say they'd be great planes for the Philipines since they want jets again but they don't really do well with nice things.

An F-5E/F and an  A-4SU would be my dream bird. The 5 is still one sexy looking plane, especially the F.

 Anyway,Tiger pron

Those Swiss jockeys are frigging GOOD! This is still one of my favorite flight clips, especially the Tiger ~3:14. Gawd, how awesome would that have been riding in back of an F? ETA- f'ed up the links, the bottom vid.

I'm pretty sure  Lucas got the idea for the rebel hanger from Switzerland:

So who is going to pony up and buy one? I wish I could, but if you have enough cash ... well your dream can come true right here in the USA!
I have no idea how much, but I know it is not even in my ball park. If you have to ask it is to much.

Switzerland is always a good country to point to when someone says militia systems are inherently unworkable.  The Swiss certainly lead the way in this regard (and both George Washington and Major General Baron von Steuben wanted to model the American militia system off of that contemporarily used in the Canton of Bern; Baron von Steuben was sent there by Washington to study the Swiss militia system).

F-5/T-38's are such nice looking birds. Father worked on them in the USAF (and got 1 or 2 flights in one).

The ones I saw, delivered to an allied air force, arrived in a C-5, on carts, the fuselages pointing up, the wings off and "tacked" to the side in plastic bags.

Easy, Jane...

There was a guy in Tulsa who had a hangar with a T-38 AND an F-5.  Oil money.  He didn't fly them much but some of my friends have seen them on the ramp.  Before the fall of the Eastern Bloc, these were the easiest path to jet warbird ownership.

Now, anyone can own a MiG.  Well, almost anyone.
