came away thinking, hmm that would be a nice truck/ SHTF gun

Plus I think one would go good with my three SKS's and Arsenal SGL21

Aside from the Romanian WASR what other underfolder AK's are out there

I don't have the answer to your question but I wonder if a fixed stock AK can be converted to an underfolder and if it is worth it to do it.

I have a Polish AKMS (Underfolder) parts kit that I've had for like 4 years now. I need to get that fucker built soon.

Yugo underfolders are nice.

I built a milled one.

Can be done. Not worth it though.

Side folders are more fun to shoot and look cooler.

It's possible, but not worth it IMO.

Just get a Romanian sidefolding stock.

Yup, see my above photo, just remove wood stock and screw in the side folder.

Yugo underfolders are pretty nice. The WASR 10/63UF (should actually be labeled a 10/65 to be historically correct as they made no AKM underfolders before then) uses a tube instead of the "C-shaped" stock arms most of the others use. I had some trouble with the safety when the stock was folded on mine until I bent it back a little with pliers. Arsenal makes a (presumably nice) underfolder but I have never gotten to handle or shoot one so no opinion there.

I have a sidefolder and they do look awesome, but I still think underfolders look slightly more awesome.

Polish AKs are also pretty much the best quality AKs out there. So that's another good reason for me to get mine built.

Underfolders are sexier, but side-folders are easier to use.

i have a yugo underfolder:

and it is one of my favorites.  replaced the plastic stuff on it with wood from ironwood designs.  It needs some kind of heat shield though, the wood handguards become amazingly hot after ~100 rounds or so.

not shown in the pic is the samson cheek rest, i've been looking for some spare wood to make that match the look too.  before that, i had the underfolder wrapped in paracord to make the cheek weld a little softer.

Not a great photo, but this is mine.  I bought it in the fall of '05 "lightly" used.
According to the markings, it's a 'mutt' with mostly Hungarian parts.  Someone on the AK side told me I have an AK barrel and front sight, but the rest is AKM.  Beats me.  I just know I love it.

I bought a Century Polish. The gun is 100% in every way, shot it in at 100 and never touched the sights.

I don't like it though. That damn stock about jars my teeth loose. My AMD is the same way. I prefere the good old Warsaw stocks.

Cool looks aside. You are going to get more longevity out of a side folder (Triangular or wire) vs. the under folder. The under folder design was borrowed from the German WWII 9mm sub gun not intermediate rifle round like the 7.62x39mm. Head over to the ak forum and look for posts on "How do I tighten up my under folder?".

It is SO NOT WORTH IT.  Hours of dremel and grinder work, rear trunnion removal, etc, etc, etc, etc.  Ask me how i know?  BUT, i've got a sweet Yugo AK that looks like it was built in the Khyber pass...

I had a Polish underfolder. Sold it because the total lack of cheekweld. That was a gun designed for spray and pray.

Here are my uf's.

The top is a yugo and the bottom is a rommy md-63. The rommy isn't  very common  both were built from kits. I prefer a uf to the side folders the side fold stocks are always too short and give terrible sight pictures.

Under folders look cool but very much suck when it's cold. What is the usual crappy and uncomfortable cheek weld becomes face is frozen to stock weld.

One of the few guns I've sold. Polish PMKMS parts build. Both it and the part kits I had were top notch quality wise. I miss looking at and finger-banging it, but I didn't care much for
shooting it. I much prefer the fixed stock or side folder.

I've had Romanian side-folders, and a Yugo. Loved the Yugo, hated the Romy side-folder. It just didn't feel like anything was there at all.
